Commerce route
MBA through CAT (management)
You finish any three-year degree, sit the CAT entrance exam, and if a business school takes you, two years there puts you into the management ranks of a company.
First question
What does this person do?
An MBA is not itself a job — it is a door into a set of jobs that companies fill mostly with MBAs. In consulting you are sent into someone else's company for a few months at a time to work out why a factory is slow or which business it should sell, and you present the answer to people much older than you. In marketing or brand management you decide what a product costs, how it is packaged, where it is advertised, and you live or die by whether sales move. In sales you own a region and a target. In operations you run the movement of goods through warehouses and trucks.
In corporate finance you build the numbers behind a company borrowing money or buying another company. In product management at a tech company you decide what gets built next. The common thread is that you are paid to make decisions with incomplete information and to persuade other people to act on them. The first years involve long hours and, in consulting, a great deal of travel.
Next question
What are they paid?

What it takes to get in
- Entrance exam
- CAT, the Common Admission Test, written once a year in November and used by the IIMs and by most other business schools. It has three sections — Quantitative Ability, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, and Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension. Some schools use xat, nmat, snap or CMAT instead of, or as well as, CAT.
- Realistic cut-off
- The formal bar is low: a bachelor's degree in any subject with at least 50 per cent marks, or 45 per cent for sc, St and PwD candidates, from a recognised university, with a minimum of three years of study after Class 12. Final-year students may apply. The real filter is what happens next — schools screen on CAT percentile first, then shortlist on a score that also counts your Class 10, Class 12 and degree marks, and only then call you for a written test and an interview. The most sought-after schools take a very small fraction of applicants; schools further down take many more. There is no age limit and no work-experience requirement.
- How long
- 5 years
- Roughly what it costs
Not stated as a single figure
The MBA itself is the expensive part and the range is enormous. At the top end, IIM Ahmedabad's published fee for the two-year 2025-27 batch is Rs 27,50,000, of which Rs 20,10,000 is tuition and the rest covers hostel and other charges, with personal expenses on top. Fees at other business schools run from a few lakh upwards. Before any of that you pay for a three-year degree, and most candidates also pay for CAT coaching. Education loans against an admission letter are ordinary and widely used, which means many people start this career owing a large sum.
Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.
- Can you switch out later?
- Very high going in, moderate coming out. Any degree qualifies you to sit CAT, so nothing you study at 17 closes this off, and people arrive from engineering, commerce, arts and science alike. Once you have the degree it is portable across industries — that is much of what you are buying. What it does not do is undo the debt: a large loan can force you to take the highest-paying job rather than the one you want, for several years.
Delhi entry paths
These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.
- Any three-year degree first — BCom, BA Economics, BBA, BSc, BTech, it genuinely does not matter which. Delhi University's commerce and economics colleges are a common starting point but confer no advantage in the exam itself
- CAT is written in your final year of college or after graduating; registration and the exam are national and there are test centres across Delhi NCR
- Delhi NCR itself has several business schools that admit through CAT or their own tests, including FMS Delhi, IIFT Delhi, MDI Gurgaon and IMI and IMT in the NCR, so you can do the whole route without leaving the region
- The CAT coaching cluster in Delhi — around Connaught Place, South Extension and the North Campus — is where a large share of North Indian candidates prepare, alongside a very large amount of free and low-cost online material
- Many candidates work for two or three years first; consulting and finance recruiters at business schools often prefer applicants who have
