Commerce route
Economics degree (policy, research and financial regulation)
You study why prices rise, why people lose jobs and what a government decision actually does — and go into work where somebody has to answer those questions with data.
First question
What does this person do?
Economics is the most mathematical of the commerce subjects and it opens a set of jobs that are mostly about measurement and argument rather than accounts. At a research institute or a think tank you take a question — did this welfare scheme reach the people it was meant for, what happens to small shops when a tax changes — find or build the data, run the statistics, and write it up so that officials and journalists can use it. At the Reserve Bank of India or the market regulator you sit inside the institution that makes the rules: you track inflation, bank lending, or what is happening in the stock market, and you write the notes that policy decisions are argued from.
In a bank, a rating agency or a consulting firm you do a version of the same work for private clients — forecasting demand, pricing risk, modelling what a policy change will cost a company. A great many economics graduates also go into general analytics and data roles, where the statistics matter more than the economics, and some go on to a doctorate and teach. The common tool is data and the common output is a written argument.
Next question
What are they paid?
LPA = lakhs per annum; ₹1 lakh = ₹100,000. These are broad India market estimates across common employers and work settings—not guaranteed offers, audited statistics or the ceiling. References give context, not proof of each exact band. Historical anchors and evidence gaps remain in Sources.

What it takes to get in
- Entrance exam
- CUET-UG, the Common University Entrance Test conducted by the National Testing Agency in computer-based mode, is the entrance for undergraduate admission to Delhi University and the other participating central universities. A master's degree, which most of the research and regulatory jobs expect, is entered through a university's own postgraduate entrance. For the regulator route there is then a separate national recruitment exam — SEBI runs its Officer Grade A exam with a Research stream among others, and the Reserve Bank of India recruits Grade B officers into a Department of Economic and Policy Research cadre alongside its general cadre.
- Realistic cut-off
- For the degree, admission is decided on your CUET-UG score, and the long-established economics programmes fill from the top end of it — this is one of the harder undergraduate admissions in the commerce stream. The content is mathematical, so students who dropped mathematics after Class 10 tend to struggle even when they get in. For the regulator and research jobs afterwards there is no published cutoff; they are national exams with a few dozen to a few hundred posts, and a postgraduate qualification is usually expected.
- How long
- 5 years
- Roughly what it costs
₹17,105
If you go through a public university this is among the cheapest routes on the map. A Delhi University college publishes a total admission fee of Rs 17,105 for BA (Hons) Economics for the 2026-27 session, excluding first-year examination fees — the whole three-year degree costs less than one month of some private alternatives. A master's at a public university is on a similar scale. Private universities charge many times that. Add CUET registration and, for many candidates, coaching.
Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.
- Can you switch out later?
- Very high. An economics degree with real statistics in it feeds into finance, data and analytics, consulting, journalism, public policy, law and the civil services, and it also qualifies you to sit CAT for an MBA or to enter the actuarial exams. Nothing about it commits you to a single profession, which is the main reason it is chosen. The trade-off is the opposite of the professional qualifications: there is no licence at the end, so what you can do with it depends entirely on what you build on top.
Delhi entry paths
These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.
- CUET-UG after Class 12, then a BA (Hons) Economics at a Delhi University college — SRCC, Hindu, Lady Shri Ram, St Stephen's, Hansraj, Kirori Mal and Miranda House among many others all teach it
- The Delhi School of Economics at Delhi University is the best-known postgraduate destination in the city; Jawaharlal Nehru University and the Indian Statistical Institute's Delhi centre are the other established routes into research work
- Delhi is where this route's employers actually sit — NITI Aayog, the finance and commerce ministries, the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, icrier, ncaer and the Delhi offices of the multilateral agencies are all in the city, which is unusual: for most commerce routes the jobs are in Mumbai
- Internships at think tanks and research institutes during the degree are the ordinary way in, and many are advertised openly rather than through a placement cell
- The Reserve Bank of India and SEBI recruitment exams are national, written after graduation or a master's, with test centres across Delhi NCR

The Securities and Exchange Board of India's 2025 recruitment advertisement for Officer Grade A — which runs a dedicated Research stream — states gross emoluments at Mumbai at the minimum of the Grade A scale of approximately Rs 1,84,000 a month without accommodation, or Rs 1,43,000 a month with accommodation provided. Rs 1,84,000 a month is Rs 22.08 lakh a year, and it includes the employer's pension contribution and a long list of allowances, so it is not take-home pay. Getting there usually means a postgraduate degree and clearing a national recruitment exam against very heavy competition, so this is a first-year-in-that-job figure, not a first-job-after-college figure. Most economics graduates start somewhere else entirely — a research associate post at a think tank, an analyst job, or another degree — and nobody publishes what those pay.

2026-08-17: SEBI's official published pay scales page, confirming the Grade A scale of 62500-3600(4)-76900-4050(7)-105250-EB-4050(4)-121450-4650(1)-126100 over seventeen years and the existence of higher officer grades B, C, D, E and F and Executive Director, each on its own published scale — the basis for stating that pay above the entry point is published as basic pay only. 2026-08-17: Historical evidence gap for the mid rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: SEBI publishes its officer pay scales — Grade A runs 62500-3600(4)-76900-4050(7)-105250-EB-4050(4)-121450-4650(1)-126100 over seventeen years — but that is basic pay, and the gross figure that includes allowances is stated only at the minimum of the scale. Outside the regulators and the central bank, no institution publishes what an economist with about five years of experience earns, and the range across think tanks, banks, consulting and analytics is far too wide to compress into one number. 2026-08-17: Historical evidence gap for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Same reason as the mid rung. What is published is the ladder above Grade A inside SEBI — Grade B, C, D, E, F and Executive Director, each with its own scale — which tells you that pay in the regulators rises on a schedule rather than by negotiation. Nothing comparable is published for the private-sector or academic branches of this route.
