Commerce route
Insurance officer (life and general insurance)
You decide who an insurance company will cover, at what price, and whether a claim gets paid — a graduate-entry officer job at a public insurer or a private one.
First question
What does this person do?
An insurance company takes money from a lot of people so it can pay the few of them that something bad happens to. Officers make that work. In underwriting you look at an application — a person's health and age, a factory's fire safety, a truck fleet's accident record — and decide whether the company will insure it and what to charge. In claims you go the other way: someone says their house burned down or their father died, and you check the documents, sometimes send an investigator, and decide what is paid and how fast.
That decision matters to a family in a very direct way, and turning down a claim that looks wrong is part of the job. Other officers manage the agents who sell policies, design new products, handle the money the company invests, or deal with the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India, which sets the rules. In the big public-sector insurers you join as a trainee officer, are posted well away from home for your first years, and are promoted on a published scale.
Next question
What are they paid?

What it takes to get in
- Entrance exam
- For the public-sector insurers, a recruitment exam run by the company — LIC's Assistant Administrative Officer exam is the largest, and the general insurers and the industry regulator run their own. LIC's selection is a three-tiered process: a preliminary exam, a main exam, then an interview. Private insurers hire through campus placement and direct applications with no common exam. The Insurance Institute of India's Licentiate, Associateship and Fellowship exams are the professional qualifications taken while working.
- Realistic cut-off
- No rank, no percentile and no particular subject. LIC's 2025 notification asks only for a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised Indian university, with age between 21 and 30. There were 350 Assistant Administrative Officer posts in that round for the whole country, so the filter is the exam itself and how many people sit it, not a published cutoff mark. Candidates who join sign an undertaking to serve at least four years, with liquidated damages of Rs 5,00,000 if they leave earlier. Specialist recruitment can have additional gates: LIC’s 2025 Insurance Specialist post required an Insurance Institute of India Life Fellowship and at least five years in an IRDAI-regulated life insurer, alongside a degree.
- How long
- 3.5 years
- Roughly what it costs
Not stated as a single figure
Almost nothing beyond the degree. LIC's 2025 application fee was Rs 700 plus transaction charges and GST for general candidates, and Rs 85 plus charges for sc, St and PwBD candidates. The real cost is the three-year degree you must finish first, plus whatever you spend preparing for the exam — the aptitude and reasoning papers overlap heavily with bank and government exams, so most candidates prepare for several at once.
Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.
- Can you switch out later?
- High before you join — any degree qualifies, so nothing is closed off by preparing for it. Moderate after. Officers move between insurers and into banking, and the Insurance Institute of India's exams are recognised across the industry. But leaving a public-sector insurer means leaving the job security and the pension behind, and the four-year service undertaking has a real price attached.
Delhi entry paths
These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.
- Any three-year degree from a Delhi University college or elsewhere — subject does not matter — then sit the recruitment exam
- Exam centres for LIC and the public general insurers run across Delhi NCR and applications are entirely online
- The competitive-exam coaching cluster in north and central Delhi that prepares candidates for bank exams prepares them for insurance exams too; the syllabus overlap is large enough that most people sit both
- The Insurance Institute of India's professional exams, which insurers pay a special allowance for passing, are taken while employed and are open to anyone in the industry
- Private life and general insurers, brokers and the Indian arms of global reinsurers have large offices in Gurgaon and Noida and hire commerce and economics graduates directly

2025-08-16: Life Insurance Corporation of India official notification for recruitment of Assistant Administrative Officers (Generalist), 32nd batch: 350 vacancies; bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised Indian university; age 21 to 30 as on 01.08.2025; basic pay Rs 88,635 a month in the scale 88635-4385(14)-150025-4750(4)-169025; total emoluments at the minimum of the scale inclusive of HRA and City Compensatory Allowance of approximately Rs 1,26,000 a month in an A-class city; application fee-cum-intimation charges of Rs 700 for general candidates and Rs 85 for sc, St and PwBD candidates, plus transaction charges and GST; a three-tiered selection process of preliminary exam, main exam and interview; an undertaking to serve a minimum of four years with liquidated damages of Rs 5,00,000; posting for a minimum of five years in mofussil branches outside the home zone; defined contributory pension and a special allowance for passing the Insurance Institute of India examinations. The source date is the notification date, 16 August 2025; the earlier recorded 1 August 2025 was the eligibility reference date. The later specialist notice separately corroborates the pay scale; neither notice establishes the broad market bands. 2025-08-16: Historical published anchor for the entry rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: This comes from the Life Insurance Corporation of India's own 2025 recruitment notification for Assistant Administrative Officers. LIC states basic pay of Rs 88,635 a month and that 'total emoluments at the minimum of the scale, inclusive of House Rent Allowance, City Compensatory Allowance etc.' work out to approximately Rs 1,26,000 a month in an A-class city — Rs 15.12 lakh a year. Three things to hold on to. It is gross, not what reaches your bank account. It is the figure for a big city; smaller-town postings carry lower allowances, and new officers are posted for at least five years to branches outside their home zone. And it is one large public-sector employer — this notice does not measure private-insurer salaries or commission-based agency income, and does not validate the broad editorial market band. 2025-08-16: Historical evidence gap for the mid rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: The LIC notification publishes a basic-pay scale and starting city-specific emoluments, not a typical total package for officers five years into their careers. Increments, promotions and allowances are different components. No representative five-year total across public and private insurers was established in this pass; the displayed band remains editorial. 2025-08-16: Historical evidence gap for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: The reviewed LIC notices do not publish a representative ten-year officer salary. They cannot establish private-insurer or commission-based earnings, or validate the displayed ten-year editorial band.

2025-08-16: LIC AAO Specialists/Assistant Engineers 2025 notice, dated 16 August 2025 on page 21; checked 2026-10-12. Section 4 gives Rs 88,635 monthly basic and approximately Rs 1,26,000 starting emoluments in an A-class city. Page 4 distinguishes Insurance Specialist eligibility: degree, Life Fellowship and five years of life-insurer experience. A second document from the same employer corroborates its scale and demonstrates specialist entry requirements; it is not independent evidence across insurers, a private-market survey, a five-/ten-year outcome, or proof of the displayed bands.
