Commerce route
Running a business (entrepreneurship and family business)
You own the thing instead of working for it — either something you start yourself or a business your family already runs — and you are paid whatever is left after everyone else is paid.
First question
What does this person do?
Two versions of the same route, and in India the second is far more common than the first. Starting something yourself means you are the person who decides what to sell, finds the first customers, works out the price, handles the money coming in and going out, hires people, and deals with registrations, GST returns and the landlord. There is no job description and no one to escalate to. Joining a family business means walking into something that already works, usually learning it from the shop floor, the godown or the accounts book, and slowly taking over decisions from a parent or an uncle — which is as much a family negotiation as a business one.
In both, the specific work depends entirely on what the business is: a trading firm, a factory, a restaurant, a software product, a clinic. What is common is that you carry the risk. In salaried routes a bad year means a smaller increment; here it can mean paying your staff before you pay yourself. It is also the one route on this map with no gatekeeper — nobody has to admit you, certify you or hire you.

What it takes to get in
- Entrance exam
- none
- Realistic cut-off
- There is no exam, no qualification and no minimum marks — starting a business does not require admission to a course or selection by an employer. What replaces the cutoff is capital and cover: money to start with and to survive on while there is no income, which for most people means family money, a loan, or a salaried job kept alongside for the first years. If you are joining a family business the entry condition is simply that the business exists. Registrations, not exams, are the formal requirements: Udyam provides MSME registration; company incorporation is a separate process, and GST or sector-specific registrations apply where legally required. These processes do not set an owner salary.
- How long
- 3 years
- Roughly what it costs
Not stated as a single figure
The paperwork is close to free; the business is not. Udyam registration for a micro, small or medium enterprise is free — the government's portal states that no costs or fees are to be paid to anyone, and Aadhaar plus PAN and GSTIN is what it needs. Incorporating a company through the MCA's SPICe+ form carries zero government filing fee where authorised capital is up to Rs 15,00,000, though stamp duty and a professional's fee usually apply. What actually costs money is stock, rent, equipment, salaries and the months of living expenses before the business pays you, and no general figure can be put on that because it depends entirely on what you are starting. Most people on this route also finish a degree first, which is a cost in itself.
Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.
- Can you switch out later?
- Two-way but asymmetric. Going in is easy at any time and from any degree, and the skills you build — selling, pricing, managing people, reading accounts — are recognised everywhere. Coming back out is harder than people expect: a few years of running your own small firm does not read on a CV the way a few years at a known employer does, and salaried hiring in India still leans heavily on brand names. This is why a very common pattern is to take a job first, save, and start later, and why family-business heirs are often sent to work somewhere else for a few years before coming back.
Delhi entry paths
These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.
- Any degree, or none — a BCom or BBA at a Delhi University college is the usual accompaniment but nothing about this route requires it
- Delhi's wholesale and manufacturing clusters are where most family businesses in the city actually sit — Chandni Chowk, Karol Bagh, Sadar Bazar, Okhla, Naraina, Wazirpur and the industrial belts across Noida, Faridabad and Gurgaon
- Registration is online and national: Udyam for MSMEs, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs' SPICe+ form for incorporating a company, GST registration where turnover requires it
- Several Delhi universities and colleges run incubators and entrepreneurship cells that give space, mentoring and small grants to student ventures, and central and Delhi government schemes exist for first-time entrepreneurs and for MSME credit
- The common realistic path is not to start at 21: it is to work for a few years in the same trade you intend to enter, learn who the suppliers and customers are, and start with that knowledge

This registration source does not publish owner-income percentiles or earnings by years in business, and it does not validate the displayed bands. Its absence of those measures is not evidence that no such data exists anywhere. 2026-08-17: Historical evidence gap for the entry rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: No representative starting owner-income figure was established in this source-quality pass. Udyam classifies enterprises using investment and turnover, not the amount an owner takes home. Turnover must not be substituted for profit or salary. The displayed zero-based band is an editorial estimate, not a measured income distribution; a business can lose money and an owner can receive nothing. 2026-08-17: Historical evidence gap for the mid rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: The cited registration source does not measure five-year owner income or business survival rates. No representative estimate for this mixed route of new ventures and established family businesses was established here. Owner drawings, business profit and revenue are different quantities; the displayed band remains editorial. 2026-08-17: Historical evidence gap for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: The registration and classification sources do not provide ten-year owner-income data. No representative earnings series for this mixed route was established in this pass.
