Arts route
Civil Services Officer (UPSC — IAS, IPS, IFS and others)
Run a piece of the government — a district, a police force, an embassy, a ministry desk — after clearing one of the hardest exams in the country.
First question
What does this person do?
You are a permanent government officer. What that means day to day depends on which service you get. An IAS officer posted as a District Magistrate signs off on land records, disaster relief, elections and law-and-order decisions for a district of a few million people, and spends the day in meetings, on site visits and reading files. An IPS officer commands police districts and investigations.
An IFS officer works in Indian embassies abroad handling visas, trade talks and political reporting. Officers in the Revenue, Audit and Railway services run tax assessment, government audit and railway operations. Most of the work is reading proposals, deciding, writing the decision down, and answering for it later. You are moved to a new posting every two or three years, and you cannot choose the city.
Next question
What are they paid?
LPA = lakhs per annum; ₹1 lakh = ₹100,000. These are broad India market estimates across common employers and work settings—not guaranteed offers, audited statistics or the ceiling. References give context, not proof of each exact band. Historical anchors and evidence gaps remain in Sources.

What it takes to get in
- Entrance exam
- UPSC Civil Services Examination (Prelims, then Mains, then Interview)
- Realistic cut-off
- Roughly 933 posts were advertised for the 2026 exam across all 23 services combined, against several lakh applicants. Well under 1 in 500 people who sit the exam are selected, and most who succeed take two or three attempts. Any bachelor's degree is enough to apply; the exam does not test your degree subject.
- How long
- 5 years
- Roughly what it costs
₹15,000–60,000
Exam fee is Rs 100 for Prelims plus Rs 200 for Mains, and is waived for women and SC/ST/PwBD candidates. The real cost is time and coaching: a three-year BA at a Delhi University college is roughly Rs 15,000-60,000 total, and full-time Delhi coaching plus living costs typically runs Rs 1.5-4 lakh per year. Self-study with free and library material is common and costs almost nothing beyond living expenses.
Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.
- Can you switch out later?
- High before you clear it, low after. The degree you do while preparing (BA, LLB, anything) stays valid for other jobs, and many people prepare alongside a job. Once you join a service, moving to the private sector is possible but uncommon; the pension, seniority and security are hard to replace.
Delhi entry paths
These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.
- Any bachelor's degree — Delhi University colleges, Jamia Millia Islamia, Ambedkar University Delhi, IGNOU. History, political science, sociology, public administration, geography and economics BAs overlap heavily with the syllabus.
- JNU and DU postgraduate departments, where a large share of candidates prepare while enrolled
- The Old Rajinder Nagar / Karol Bagh / Mukherjee Nagar coaching ecosystem in Delhi, which is where most full-time aspirants base themselves
- Free and subsidised coaching run by Jamia Millia Islamia's Residential Coaching Academy and by several state governments' Delhi study centres

2015-11-19: Report of the Seventh Central Pay Commission, Table 5: Pay Matrix (Civilian Employees). Gives entry basic pay by Level — Level 10 Rs 56,100, Level 11 Rs 67,700, Level 12 Rs 78,800. 2015-11-19: Historical published anchor for the entry rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Entry is Pay Matrix Level 10, basic pay Rs 56,100 per month (7th CPC Pay Matrix, Table 5, still the matrix in force). Dearness allowance is 60% of basic pay from 1 January 2026. Low end = basic + DA only; high end adds house rent allowance for a metro posting. Excludes government housing, official vehicle, staff and pension, which are a large part of what the job is actually worth. 2015-11-19: Historical published anchor for the mid rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Around year 5 an IAS/IPS officer moves to Senior Time Scale, Pay Matrix Level 11, basic pay Rs 67,700 to Rs 71,800. Same DA and HRA arithmetic as the entry rung. Officers in the other central services move up this ladder more slowly, so 5-year pay for a non-IAS officer may still be Level 10. 2015-11-19: Historical published anchor for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Around year 9-10 an IAS officer reaches Junior Administrative Grade, Pay Matrix Level 12, basic pay Rs 78,800 to Rs 83,600. Same DA and HRA arithmetic. Government pay is fixed by rule, so there is almost no spread between individuals at the same level — the spread here comes from posting city (HRA) and how fast a particular service promotes.
