Arts route

Corporate Lawyer (law firm associate)

Write and argue over the contracts behind company takeovers, share sales and big deals — mostly at a desk, rarely in a courtroom.

First question

What does this person do?

You work at a law firm for companies, not for individuals. A typical week is reading a client's contracts to find the clauses that could hurt them, drafting the paperwork for one company buying another, checking whether a deal breaks any Indian regulation, and sitting on calls where the two sides argue over wording. Junior years are heavy on document review and drafting and the hours are long — deal closings routinely run past midnight.

You specialise fast: mergers and acquisitions, banking, competition law, tax, disputes. Very little of this happens in a courtroom; that is the litigation route, which is a different job.

Next question

What are they paid?

LPA = lakhs per annum; ₹1 lakh = ₹100,000. These are broad India market estimates across common employers and work settings—not guaranteed offers, audited statistics or the ceiling. References give context, not proof of each exact band. Historical anchors and evidence gaps remain in Sources.

What it takes to get in

Entrance exam
CLAT (Common Law Admission Test) for the national law universities; AILET for NLU Delhi; LSAT-India or university tests elsewhere. Entry after class 12 for the five-year integrated LLB.
Realistic cut-off
Around 60,000-70,000 candidates sit CLAT each year for roughly 3,000 five-year LLB seats across the participating national law universities, so about 1 in 20 get a seat and far fewer get one at a top-five NLU. Open to any stream, including arts; CLAT tests English, current affairs, legal and logical reasoning and light quantitative technique — no law is assumed.
How long
5 years
Roughly what it costs

₹10–20 lakh

National law universities charge roughly Rs 2-3.5 lakh a year including hostel, so about Rs 10-17 lakh for the five years. A three-year LLB after graduation at Faculty of Law, Delhi University costs a fraction of that — a few thousand rupees a year — but does not feed the same recruiting pipeline. Private law schools run higher, up to Rs 20 lakh and above for the degree.

Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.

Can you switch out later?
Good. A law degree is accepted for the judiciary exam, UPSC, company secretarial and compliance roles, policy work, and in-house legal teams at companies. Moving from corporate law into litigation is possible but means a large pay cut; moving the other way is harder.

Delhi entry paths

These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.

  • National Law University Delhi — admits through AILET, not CLAT
  • Faculty of Law, University of Delhi — three-year LLB after any bachelor's degree, very low fees
  • Campus Law Centre and Law Centres I and II, University of Delhi
  • Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia — both the five-year integrated BA LLB and the three-year LLB
  • Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University's affiliated law schools across Delhi
  • CLAT from Delhi, which feeds the national law universities in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Gandhinagar and elsewhere
