Psychologist (BA/BSc Psychology via DU and CUET-UG)

Study how people think and behave — but the three-year bachelor's on its own is not a licence to treat anyone, and what you can actually practise depends entirely on what you study after it.

First question

What does this person do?

A psychology bachelor's is the start of several different careers that fork hard after graduation, and this is the single most important thing to understand before choosing it. A school counsellor sits with students and their families, works through behavioural and academic problems, and refers serious cases onward — this is a real, government-recognised job in Delhi, reached with a master's degree plus a short diploma. An HR or 'people analytics' professional at a company uses psychology to design hiring tests, engagement surveys and training programmes — closer to a corporate desk job than therapy. A UX researcher interviews users and runs tests to see whether a product design actually works, a growing destination for psychology graduates that has nothing to do with mental health treatment. A clinical psychologist — the one who diagnoses and treats mental illness, the job most people picture when they hear 'psychologist' — is a completely different, much longer commitment: it requires a statutory licence from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), on top of the bachelor's and master's, and unlicensed clinical practice is illegal in India. Be honest with yourself about which of these you are choosing.

A three or four-year BA/BSc in Psychology alone qualifies you for very little clinical work. To become a licensed clinical psychologist you need an RCI-recognised postgraduate qualification — historically a two-year M. Phil in Clinical Psychology, which RCI is phasing out from the 2025-26 admission cycle in favour of a two-year RCI-regulated MA in Clinical Psychology under the same licensing framework — on top of a four-year UGC-recognised BA/BSc in Psychology. Total time from finishing class 12 to being licensed to treat patients runs to six years minimum, and RCI-recognised seats are genuinely scarce: roughly 40-odd institutions nationally each admit around 10 students a year, a few hundred seats for a country of 1. 4 billion. Counselling psychology and organisational/HR psychology do not require RCI licensing and are reached with an ordinary MA, which is why far more psychology graduates end up there than in clinical practice — the licensed clinical route has a separate, restricted qualification gate; this does not establish a pay ranking between the paths.

What it takes to get in

Entrance exam
CUET-UG for the BA/BSc Psychology (Hons), which most Delhi University and Jamia Millia Islamia colleges use for admission; CUET-PG for a Master's in Psychology afterwards. Becoming a licensed clinical psychologist additionally requires clearing separate admission to an RCI-recognised clinical psychology postgraduate programme, and then RCI registration itself — a distinct, much more selective gate that a general MA in Psychology does not open.
Realistic cut-off
BA (Hons) Psychology is one of the most sought-after arts programmes at Delhi University — CUET scores in the high 900s (out of a much larger total scale used from 2025 onward) are typically needed for a seat at a well-regarded DU college, competitive with many science programmes. Any class 12 stream can apply. The RCI-recognised clinical psychology postgraduate route is a different order of selective: roughly 40-odd approved institutions nationally admit around 10 students each per year, a few hundred seats a year against a much larger pool of psychology graduates who want them.
How long
6 years
Roughly what it costs

₹30,000–1 lakh

A BA (Hons) Psychology at a Delhi University college costs a few thousand rupees a year — roughly Rs 30,000-1 lakh for the full three years. An MA in Psychology at a central university adds a broadly similar amount. The RCI-recognised MA in Clinical Psychology is a separate and more expensive step: government-linked institutes charge relatively little, but private universities commonly charge upward of Rs 4-5 lakh for the two-year programme, on top of everything already spent on the bachelor's and first master's.

Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.

Can you switch out later?
Very good if you stay outside clinical practice — a psychology degree is accepted for HR, UX research, market research, teaching, journalism and content roles, civil services preparation, and further study in unrelated fields, and none of those destinations require the RCI credential. Switchability drops sharply for anyone set on clinical psychology specifically: without the RCI-recognised postgraduate qualification and licence, you cannot legally diagnose or treat patients, no matter how strong the bachelor's degree was.

Delhi entry paths

These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.

  • Delhi University colleges offering BA (Hons) Psychology — including Lady Shri Ram College, Jesus and Mary College, Daulat Ram College, Indraprastha College for Women, Kamala Nehru College and others — entered through CUET-UG
  • Jamia Millia Islamia's Department of Psychology, entered through CUET-UG
  • Ambedkar University Delhi, which offers psychology at undergraduate and postgraduate level, entered through CUET
  • Delhi University's Department of Psychology for the MA, entered through CUET-PG
  • DSSSB, which conducts the Educational and Vocational Guidance Counsellor recruitment for Delhi government schools, is the concrete government destination reachable from a Delhi-based MA in Psychology plus a guidance-and-counselling diploma
  • No RCI-recognised clinical psychology postgraduate programme sits inside Delhi University itself as of this entry — Delhi-based aspirants for the licensed clinical route generally apply to RCI-approved institutes elsewhere in India, which is a genuine limitation of doing this route from Delhi

2023-01-01: Official DSSSB recruitment advertisement (Advt No. 02/23) for the Directorate of Education, Government of NCT of Delhi: confirms the Educational and Vocational Guidance Counsellor (EVGC) post requires a Master's degree in Psychology plus a Diploma in Guidance and Counselling, and is placed at Pay Level 8, Rs 47,600-1,51,100 per month, Grade Pay Rs 4,800 (pre-revised scale). 2023-01-01: Historical published anchor for the entry rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Basic pay only, and for one specific government destination. The Delhi government's Directorate of Education recruits Educational and Vocational Guidance Counsellors (EVGC) through DSSSB, requiring a Master's degree in Psychology plus a Diploma in Guidance and Counselling. The post is Pay Level 8, basic pay Rs 47,600 per month, with Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and transport allowance on top. This is a real, sourced, government-recognised destination for a psychology postgraduate, but it describes only school counselling in Delhi government schools — the much larger number of psychology graduates who go into private counselling, HR, EdTech content, market research or UX research after a BA or MA have no comparable published figure, and this number should not be read as 'what psychology pays'. 2023-01-01: Historical evidence gap for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: No acceptable published source. At ten years the range runs from a senior government counsellor on the ordinary pay-matrix track, to a clinical psychologist with an established private practice (income as business profit, not published anywhere), to an organisational psychologist in a senior corporate role. None of these figures are collected in any public dataset this project is willing to cite.

By this stage the field has split hard: some are still working toward RCI licensure in clinical psychology (a fresh RCI-licensed clinical psychologist entering a government hospital post, such as at AIIMS, starts at Pay Level 10, basic Rs 56,100 per month per that post's own recruitment notification — but reaching that stage commonly takes longer than five years given the extra two years of RCI-regulated postgraduate study required after a psychology master's), others are in private counselling practice charging per session, others are in corporate HR or UX research roles that publish no pay data, and DSSSB itself does not publish a promotion-linked pay progression for the EVGC post. Nothing is stated rather than guessed.
