Arts route

Designer (B.Des via NID / NIFT / UCEED)

Design the products, clothes, packaging and screens people use every day — trained at India's design schools, where the pay is far less predictable than the placement photos suggest.

First question

What does this person do?

Design splits into families that do not feel like the same job. A product or industrial designer sketches and models physical objects — furniture, appliances, vehicle interiors, medical devices — moving between sketching, 3D software and prototypes, and sitting with engineers and manufacturers to work out what can actually be built and sold. A communication or UX designer works on branding, packaging and the screens of apps and websites, closer to a tech company than a workshop. A textile or fashion designer works with fabric, colour and cut, either inside a large apparel or export house turning a trend brief into a production-ready garment at speed, or inside a small design label doing more of the creative work but with far less institutional support. A lot of the actual week, whichever family you are in, is not solo creative work: it is client presentations, revisions after a critique you did not agree with, and chasing a vendor or tailor to get a sample right before a deadline. The route in matters because it is really three different exams leading to three different worlds. The National Institute of Design's own DAT and the National Institute of Fashion Technology's own entrance exam are both open to any class 12 stream, including arts.

UCEED, the exam that gets you a B. Des at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and five other IITs, requires class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Maths — so despite being commonly listed alongside NID and NIFT, it is closed to most arts-stream students and is not really part of this route for them. Be clear-eyed about the pay. Unlike engineering or law, neither NID nor NIFT publishes an audited median placement salary the way NIRF-participating institutes do — their own placement brochures describe process and recruiters, not verified pay figures. What circulates online instead is a wide, inconsistent scatter of numbers from education-marketing sites, often citing the same one or two anecdotal figures dressed up as institute-wide averages, and it is not safe to treat any of them as a reliable median. What is well documented is the shape of the split: a small number of graduates, disproportionately from NID's Ahmedabad campus, go into corporate product or UX design roles at large consumer and technology companies and are paid well by Indian standards; a much larger number go into apparel export houses, small design studios, retail chains and craft-based work, where pay is far more ordinary and, especially in fashion and textile design, often closer to freelance or contract income than a fixed salary.

What it takes to get in

Entrance exam
NID DAT (Design Aptitude Test) for the National Institutes of Design, and NIFT's own entrance exam (NIFTEE, conducted by NTA) for the National Institute of Fashion Technology — both open to any class 12 stream including arts, with a written test followed by a studio test and interview. UCEED, the exam for the B.Des at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and five other IITs, requires class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Maths and is therefore not open to most arts-stream students despite being commonly named alongside NID and NIFT.
Realistic cut-off
Roughly 17,000-19,000 candidates sat the NID DAT prelims for about 425 B.Des seats across NID's campuses in 2026 — a real bottleneck, especially for the flagship Ahmedabad campus. NIFT drew a larger pool, with over 30,000 candidates registering nationally for its combined B.Des and B.FTech seats across 19 campuses. Both exams pair a written aptitude and general-knowledge paper with a drawing or studio round and an interview, so a strong academic record alone does not get you in — a portfolio and drawing ability, usually built through months of separate coaching, matter as much as the written score.
How long
4 years
Roughly what it costs

₹12–18 lakh

NID's flagship Ahmedabad campus runs to roughly Rs 18 lakh total for the four-year B.Des; NID's newer campuses (Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Assam) are cheaper, commonly Rs 12-14 lakh including hostel. NIFT's tuition alone runs to roughly Rs 14 lakh over four years at its Delhi campus, with hostel billed separately on top. On top of either, dedicated NID/NIFT/UCEED coaching in Delhi commonly runs Rs 30,000-75,000, and a serious portfolio-building programme can add another Rs 70,000-90,000 — a cost families researching only tuition fees often miss entirely.

Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.

Can you switch out later?
Good in the corporate and UX-adjacent design families — design skills transfer into product and UX roles at technology companies, which pay considerably better than most of the design industry itself and actively recruit people with a design-school background. Moving into your own studio or freelance practice is common and normal for this field rather than a sign of failure. Moving out of fashion and textile design specifically is harder, because the skills are more specific and the network that gets you work is built inside that world.

Delhi entry paths

These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.

  • NIFT New Delhi at Hauz Khas, one of the original NIFT campuses, entered through NIFT's own national entrance exam (NIFTEE)
  • IIT Delhi's B.Des, entered through UCEED — present in Delhi but closed to arts-stream students because UCEED requires class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Maths
  • NID itself has no Delhi campus — its campuses are in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Bengaluru, Kurukshetra (Haryana), Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh), Jorhat (Assam) and Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh), so a Delhi student who gets in through NID DAT leaves the city for it
  • Pearl Academy and other private design schools in Delhi NCR, entered through their own separate tests rather than NID DAT, NIFT's exam or UCEED, at a materially higher cost
  • Delhi's NID DAT / NIFT / UCEED coaching and portfolio-building ecosystem is concentrated around Rajinder Nagar, Lado Sarai and South Extension

  1. National Institute of Fashion Technology nift.ac.in

2026-08-18: NIFT's own official placements page, confirming the institute publishes its placement process, recruiter list and campus schedule but no verified salary figures — checked directly rather than through a secondary summary. 2026-08-18: Historical evidence gap for the entry rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: No audited median exists. NID and NIFT are both centrally funded institutes, but neither publishes a verified placement salary disclosure of the kind IITs and NIRF-participating institutes provide — NIFT's own official placements page (checked directly) describes only process, recruiters and vacancy counts, no pay figures. Numbers that circulate for NID (roughly Rs 9-30 lakh depending on which secondary site you read) and for NIFT (roughly Rs 4-9 lakh) come from education-marketing aggregators repeating each other, sometimes citing a single standout offer as if it were the average, and the spread between them already breaks this project's own 2.5x range rule. None of it is treated as a sourced figure here. 2026-08-18: Historical evidence gap for the mid rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: No source. By five years, designers have split across corporate in-house design teams, export houses, small studios and freelance or contract work, and none of these publish pay data. There is no government pay-matrix equivalent for 'designer' the way there is for engineers or doctors, because most of this route's jobs are private-sector by nature. A designer who becomes NID or NIFT teaching faculty instead would sit on the ordinary AICTE/UGC Assistant Professor scale (7th CPC Level 10, basic pay Rs 56,100 per month), but that describes a small minority who move into academia, not the route as a whole. 2026-08-18: Historical evidence gap for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: No source. At ten years the spread is wider still — a senior in-house designer at a large company, a design studio founder, and a garment export house's design head are all on this route and hold completely different income structures, none of it published. Nothing is stated rather than guessed.
