Arts route
Social Worker / Development Sector Professional
Get paid to run the programmes that actually reach people — child protection, mental health, disaster relief, village water and sanitation — for an NGO, a government mission or a company's foundation.
First question
What does this person do?
This is a salaried job, not volunteering. A medical social worker in a hospital sits with a family deciding whether to go ahead with expensive treatment, and finds the government scheme or charitable fund that will pay for it. A social worker in a child protection unit visits a home, works out whether a child is safe there, and files the report a court acts on.
In the wider development sector — the large NGOs, the government's national missions, and company foundations spending their legally required CSR budgets — you design a programme, hire and train the field staff who run it in villages or urban slums, write the proposal that gets it funded, and then measure whether it worked and report that to whoever paid for it. Much of the week is travelling to field sites and sitting in community meetings, and the rest is at a laptop turning what you saw into a budget, a report or a case file. Money in this sector splits in two: the same degree leads to a field post at a small NGO that pays modestly, and to a corporate CSR or development-consulting job that pays several times more.

What are they paid?
LPA = lakhs per annum; ₹1 lakh = ₹100,000. These are broad India market estimates across common employers and work settings—not guaranteed offers, audited statistics or the ceiling. References give context, not proof of each exact band. Historical anchors and evidence gaps remain in Sources.

What it takes to get in
- Entrance exam
- The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) — CUET-UG for a Bachelor of Social Work, CUET-PG for a Master of Social Work. The Tata Institute of Social Sciences moved its master's admissions onto CUET-PG from the 2025-26 cycle and runs a separate test only for seats left vacant afterwards. Many colleges admit to a BSW or MSW on marks alone with no exam.
- Realistic cut-off
- Getting into the field at all is not hard: social work departments exist in dozens of universities and many admit on marks. Getting into the small group of institutions that lead to the well-paid end of the sector is hard, and TISS is the sharpest bottleneck. Any stream can apply — you do not need to have taken any particular subject in class 12.
- How long
- 5 years
- Roughly what it costs
₹1–2 lakh
Roughly Rs 1-2 lakh in total for a master's at a central university such as TISS, Delhi University or Jamia Millia Islamia, including hostel in most cases. A Bachelor of Social Work at a Delhi University college is a few thousand rupees a year. Private universities charge several times more for the same degree.
Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.
- Can you switch out later?
- Good. The degree is accepted for public policy work, human resources, research jobs, government mission posts, the UPSC route, and further study abroad. The direction people rarely reverse is the one out of corporate CSR back into field work, because the pay drop is large.
Delhi entry paths
These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.
- Delhi University — the Department of Social Work runs the Master of Social Work, and several colleges run the three-year BA
- Jamia Millia Islamia — Department of Social Work, one of the oldest in the country, offering both the BSW and the MSW
- Ambedkar University Delhi — master's programmes in social work and in development studies
- Tata Institute of Social Sciences, entered from Delhi through CUET-PG; its campuses are in Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad
- Indira Gandhi National Open University, which runs the MSW by distance for people already working
- Internships and field placements with the Delhi-based head offices of the large NGOs, UN agencies and company foundations, which is how most people in this sector get their first job

Earlier years were much lower: Rs 6,50,000 in 2022-23 and Rs 6,00,000 in 2021-22. TISS is the best-known social work school in the country and this median pools all its two-year master's programmes, so it describes the strong end of this route rather than the middle of it. A graduate of a less well-known social work department, or anyone taking a field post at a small NGO, starts well below this. 2025-09-04: Historical evidence gap for the mid rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: No credible published figure was found. Pay in this sector splits hard by year five: a programme manager at a field NGO and a CSR manager at a large company hold the same degree and are separated by a multiple, not a margin. Indian NGOs are not required to publish salary bands and the large ones do not, government mission posts are contract appointments whose rates vary by state, and the sector's own salary surveys are not public. A single averaged number here would describe nobody, so none is given. 2025-09-04: Historical evidence gap for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: No credible published figure was found. At ten years the split is wider still — heads of programme at large international NGOs, CSR heads at listed companies, independent consultants paid by the day, and long-serving field staff at small organisations are all on this route and none of their pay is published. Nothing is stated rather than guessing.
