Arts route

Hotel Management Professional (B.Sc HHA via NCHMCT JEE)

Run the operations behind hotels, restaurants and events — a genuinely low-cost government-college route in, with a starting salary that is real and modest, not the glamorous number the brochures imply.

First question

What does this person do?

Hotel management splits into operational departments that you rotate through as a student and then usually specialise in as a graduate. Front office is the face of a hotel — check-in, check-out, guest requests, handling complaints in person. Housekeeping runs the unglamorous, relentless work of keeping every room and public area clean and ready, and is usually where the most staff and the most supervisory responsibility sits. Food production is the kitchen — long hours on your feet, heat, and a strict hierarchy from commis up to executive chef. Food and beverage service is the restaurant and banqueting floor. Almost everyone starts as a Management Trainee, a fixed-term rotation through several of these departments before being placed permanently in one, and the trainee period's actual take-home is often lower than the annual CTC figure implies, since it can include probation terms and delayed increments that a headline number does not show.

The honest picture on pay starts with where graduates actually go. Institute of Hotel Management, Pusa in Delhi — one of India's original central government hotel management institutes and the most selective in the network — publishes its own itemised placement remuneration chart by recruiter, and it shows something the internet's rounded 'average package' claims usually hide: most individual job offers cluster in the Rs 2. 2-4. 8 lakh range, and the handful of much higher offers (from e-commerce, real estate and consulting-adjacent recruiters rather than hotels themselves) pull the average up well above what a typical graduate actually gets. A large share of every recent IHM Pusa cohort, in fact, is hired not by hotels at all but by retail, quick-service restaurant chains, e-commerce, real estate services and edtech companies — Zomato, Bluestone, Metro Brands, CBRE, Table Space and Reliance all appear as recruiters in the institute's own 2025-26 placement records. This is not what most 17-year-olds picture when they picture 'hotel management', and it is worth knowing before you commit.

What it takes to get in

Entrance exam
NCHMCT JEE, a single national exam conducted by the National Testing Agency for admission to the three-year B.Sc in Hospitality and Hotel Administration (B.Sc HHA) at all participating IHMs.
Realistic cut-off
Nationally, this route is less competitive at the aggregate level than its reputation suggests: around 11,068 candidates appeared for NCHMCT JEE in 2025 against roughly 12,700 seats across all participating IHMs, meaning seats have started to outnumber applicants as interest in the field has declined. That aggregate number hides a real bottleneck at the top: the original central government IHMs, including IHM Pusa in Delhi, remain genuinely competitive and are what most applicants are actually trying to get into, while a large share of the surplus seats sit at newer state and private IHMs with far less placement strength. Any class 12 stream, including arts, can apply.
How long
3 years
Roughly what it costs

₹4.93–8 lakh

IHM Pusa's own published fee structure puts the full three-year B.Sc HHA at roughly Rs 4.93 lakh, government-regulated and low relative to most professional degrees; hostel is billed separately. Private IHMs charge considerably more for the same degree, commonly reported up to around Rs 8 lakh, without the placement strength of the central government institutes.

Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.

Can you switch out later?
Good, and this happens earlier than people expect — the recruiter list at even a hotel-focused institute like IHM Pusa already includes retail, quick-service restaurant chains, e-commerce, facility management and real estate services companies at the point of first job, not after years of hotel experience. Within hotel operations specifically, moving between departments (front office, housekeeping, food and beverage, kitchen) is normal early on; moving up to hotel general management from any of them is the traditional long path and takes many years.

Delhi entry paths

These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.

  • Institute of Hotel Management, Catering and Nutrition (IHM Pusa), New Delhi — one of India's original central government IHMs and the most selective in the network, entered through NCHMCT JEE
  • NCHMCT JEE is a national computer-based exam with test centres across Delhi NCR; you do not need to already be in Delhi to sit it
  • Delhi is headquarters city for a large number of the hotel chains, QSR groups and hospitality-adjacent companies that recruit from IHMs
  • The wider NCHMCT network includes 22 central government IHMs, roughly 32 state government IHMs, 1 PSU-sponsored IHM and 25 private IHMs nationally, coordinated through the same central counselling process reachable from Delhi at nchmcounselling.nic.in

2026-08-01: IHM Pusa's own official, itemised placement remuneration chart by recruiter for the 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26 batches, giving monthly and annual CTC per company, total offers, highest salary, average salary, and — for 2025-26 — median salary (Rs 4,08,000) alongside the average (Rs 4,23,000), plus placement percentage for each batch. 2026-08-01: Historical published anchor for the entry rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Sourced directly from IHM Pusa's own published remuneration chart, one of the few institution-level pay disclosures in this dataset detailed enough to give a median, an average and a placement count for the same batch. The most recent disclosed batch (2025-26) shows a MEDIAN gross salary of Rs 4,08,000 against an AVERAGE of Rs 4,23,000 and a highest offer of Rs 7,00,000, on 229 of 264 students placed. The prior batch (2024-25) averaged Rs 5,33,000 with a highest of Rs 8,80,000, and the batch before that (2023-24) averaged Rs 5,00,000 with a highest of Rs 8,43,200 — so the range given here spans the most recent median to the recent-year average, and both the average and the highest offer have fallen year over year. This is IHM Pusa specifically, the most selective central IHM in the country; the roughly 60 other central and state IHMs and 25 private IHMs publish no comparable disclosure, and pay at most of them is understood to be lower. Figures are gross CTC as recorded by the institute's placement cell, not necessarily first-year take-home — many roles are filled as fixed-term Management Trainee positions with probation terms that can affect early pay. 2026-08-01: Historical evidence gap for the mid rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: No acceptable published source. By five years, hotel management graduates have split across hotel operations (where promotion to department head level is realistic on this timeline), the many non-hotel employers already visible at entry (retail, QSR, e-commerce, facility management, real estate), and further study such as an MBA. None of these publish a tracked alumni salary figure. 2026-08-01: Historical evidence gap for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: No acceptable published source. At ten years a hotel operations career could mean a department head or general manager at a hotel, a senior operations role at a non-hotel company, or having left the field entirely — none of it tracked publicly.
