Dentist (BDS)

Diagnose and treat problems with teeth, gums and the mouth - fillings, extractions, braces, implants and surgery.

First question

What does this person do?

You spend your day working inside people's mouths with your hands and with precision instruments, mostly standing or leaning over a chair. The work is a mix of routine and skilled craft: cleaning and scaling, filling cavities, root canals, pulling teeth, fitting crowns and bridges. Specialists go further - orthodontists move teeth with braces, oral surgeons operate on the jaw, periodontists treat gum disease. A lot of the job is also talking to nervous people and calming them down.

Pay depends strongly on the type of practice and employment. India trains far more dentists each year than the market absorbs, and the published entry earnings for new graduates are strikingly low - much lower than most sixteen-year-olds assume when they think 'doctor of teeth'. Dentists who do well usually do it by building their own clinic over many years, or by specialising through an MDS, not by taking a salaried job straight after BDS.

Next question

What are they paid?

LPA = lakhs per annum; ₹1 lakh = ₹100,000. These are broad India market estimates across common employers and work settings—not guaranteed offers, audited statistics or the ceiling. References give context, not proof of each exact band. Historical anchors and evidence gaps remain in Sources.

What it takes to get in

Entrance exam
NEET-UG - the same single national exam used for MBBS. There is no separate dental entrance exam.
Realistic cut-off
BDS closes at a substantially lower NEET-UG score than MBBS, because almost every candidate who can get MBBS takes it. In practice BDS is what a large number of NEET candidates take when their score is not enough for an MBBS seat. Many private BDS seats go unfilled each year, so a seat somewhere is obtainable at a fairly modest score - but a government BDS seat is still competitive.
How long
5 years
Roughly what it costs

₹50,000–40 lakh

Government dental college: roughly Rs 50,000-3 lakh for the whole course. Private dental college: commonly Rs 15-40 lakh for the course, and MDS specialisation on top of that can involve a capitation fee of around Rs 20-40 lakh according to the Delhi government dental institute. This is the central risk of this route: taking a Rs 25 lakh loan for a private BDS seat against the entry earnings shown above is a mismatch that has hurt a lot of families.

Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.

Can you switch out later?
Poor. BDS is a five-year clinical degree that qualifies you for one thing. Dentists who leave clinical work typically move into dental product and equipment sales, dental laboratory work, public health, hospital administration or teaching - or leave healthcare entirely via an MBA or a government exam, effectively starting over. Plan on the assumption that you will be a dentist.

Delhi entry paths

These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.

  • Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, a Delhi government institute, entered through NEET-UG
  • Faculty of Dentistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, and the University College of Medical Sciences and ESIC dental seats in Delhi, all through NEET-UG
  • Delhi's NEET coaching ecosystem - concentrated in Rajinder Nagar, Karol Bagh, Pitampura and Laxmi Nagar - prepares for NEET-UG generally; there is no separate dental preparation
  • Delhi state quota seats in the NEET-UG counselling are reserved for candidates who have studied in Delhi schools, so where you did class 11 and 12 matters

2026-08-17: Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences (Government of NCT of Delhi) official 'Future Prospects' page: the stated fresh-dentist earnings of Rs 5,000-10,000 per month, the range of career options open to BDS and MDS graduates, and the reported MDS capitation fee of around Rs 20-40 lakh 2026-08-17: Historical published anchor for the entry rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: The Delhi government's own dental institute states plainly that 'as a fresh dentist, you'll be able to earn Rs. 5,000 - Rs 10,000 only' - that is per month, working as an assistant in someone else's clinic. This historical figure has an important limitation: the page carries no date, so it may reflect an earlier period and current figures may be somewhat higher. It is included because it is an official statement from a government dental college rather than a marketing claim, and because the direction it points - very low starting earnings for new dentists - is consistent and well known. The small minority who win a salaried government Dental Surgeon post start far higher, at Level 11, basic Rs 67,700 per month.

  2. Dental Council of India dciindia.gov.in

2026-08-17: Dental Council of India BDS Course Regulations: the BDS degree is a four-year course followed by one year of compulsory paid rotating internship, giving a total of five years

2026-08-17: Official 7th Pay Commission pay level table giving the basic pay bands used for government Dental Surgeon posts: Level 11 Rs 67,700-2,08,700 and Level 12 Rs 78,800-2,09,200 2026-08-17: Historical published anchor for the mid rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Basic pay only, and for the government route only. Salaried Dental Surgeon posts in central government service are placed at Level 11, basic pay Rs 67,700 per month, with Dearness Allowance, Non-Practising Allowance, HRA and transport allowance on top. This figure does NOT describe the majority of dentists, who are in private practice; no reliable published source gives private dental practice earnings at five years, so treat the private path as genuinely unknown at this rung. 2026-08-17: Historical evidence gap for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: No acceptable published source gives earnings for established dentists at around ten years. Most are self-employed clinic owners, so their income is business profit rather than salary and is not collected in any public dataset. The spread between a dentist with a busy owned clinic in a large city and one working sessions in a small town is very wide - wide enough that any single range would be misleading. What can be said with a source: a government Dental Surgeon at this stage remains within Level 11 to Level 12 of the pay matrix, basic Rs 67,700 to Rs 78,800 per month.
