Science route
Nurse (B.Sc Nursing)
Deliver the day-to-day care that keeps hospital patients alive - the people who are actually at the bedside, all day and all night.
First question
What does this person do?
Nurses do the continuous work of a hospital. You monitor patients and spot when someone is getting worse, give medicines and injections, manage drips and wounds and catheters, assist in operating theatres, and keep detailed records. In an intensive care unit you are watching machines and readings minute by minute. You also do a large amount of explaining and reassuring, for patients and for frightened families.
It is physically demanding - long shifts on your feet, including nights - and emotionally demanding in a way people underestimate, because you are close to patients for far longer than doctors are. Two things about this route matter for planning. First, the pay gap between government and private employment is unusually large in nursing: a government Nursing Officer post pays several times what many small private hospitals pay a new nurse. Second, Indian nursing qualifications travel: registered nurses are recruited by the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Gulf states, Australia and Canada, and this is one of the few Indian degrees with a well-worn legal route to working abroad.

What it takes to get in
- Entrance exam
- For the four-year B.Sc Nursing, entry is through NEET-UG in central institutions and many states, and through state or institutional nursing entrance tests elsewhere. AIIMS and some central bodies run their own B.Sc Nursing entrance. The shorter GNM diploma is usually entered through a state nursing council process rather than NEET.
- Realistic cut-off
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology and usually at least 45-50% aggregate. B.Sc Nursing needs a far lower NEET score than MBBS and is realistically reachable for a wide range of candidates, though seats at central institutions like AIIMS are competitive. Registration with a State Nursing Council after graduating is compulsory before you can work.
- How long
- 4 years
- Roughly what it costs
₹20,000–10 lakh
Government nursing college: roughly Rs 20,000-2 lakh for the whole four-year B.Sc Nursing. Private nursing college: commonly Rs 3-10 lakh for the course. The three-year GNM diploma is cheaper again. Compared with MBBS or private engineering, this is a low-cost route into clinical healthcare.
Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.
- Can you switch out later?
- Moderate. Nursing registration is required to practise, so the qualification is specific - but the demand is high enough in India and abroad that finding work is rarely the problem. Nurses move into hospital administration, infection control, clinical research and trials coordination, medical device and pharmaceutical roles, public health programmes, and nursing education. A large number use the degree to emigrate, which is itself a form of switching.
Delhi entry paths
These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.
- College of Nursing at AIIMS New Delhi, and the nursing colleges attached to Lady Hardinge Medical College, Safdarjung Hospital, GB Pant and Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing
- Delhi University's Rajkumari Amrit Kaur College of Nursing and Jamia Hamdard's nursing programmes
- NEET-UG is written at Delhi centres and is the entry for most B.Sc Nursing seats; the Delhi NEET coaching ecosystem serves this route as a by-product of MBBS preparation
- Delhi Nursing Council registration is what lets you practise in Delhi after graduating
- Government hospital recruitment for Nursing Officer posts in Delhi runs through AIIMS, the Ministry of Health, and the Delhi government health department

Staff Nurse and Nursing Officer posts in central government hospitals, including AIIMS, are placed at Level 7 of the pay matrix, basic Rs 44,900 per month, with Dearness Allowance, HRA, transport allowance and night-duty allowance on top. IMPORTANT: many small and mid-size private hospitals pay new nurses far less than this. No source meeting this project's standard publishes private-hospital nursing pay, so that figure is genuinely not known here - but do not assume the government figure applies to every nursing job. 2026-08-17: Historical published anchor for the mid rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Basic pay only. At around five years a government nurse is progressing within Level 7 (Rs 44,900 per month basic) towards Level 8 (Rs 47,600 per month basic) on promotion to a senior nursing post. Allowances as above are on top and add a large amount. 2026-08-17: Historical published anchor for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Basic pay only. At around ten years, senior nursing posts such as Assistant Nursing Superintendent sit between Level 8 (Rs 47,600 per month basic) and Level 10 (Rs 56,100 per month basic). Allowances are on top. Nurses who move abroad to the UK, Ireland, the Gulf, Australia or Canada typically earn several times the Indian figure, but foreign salary scales are outside the India-only scope of this map.
