Science route

Pharmacist (B.Pharm / Pharm.D)

Know medicines inside out - how they are made, what they do, what they must never be mixed with - and either make them, test them, or hand them to patients.

First question

What does this person do?

Pharmacy splits into three quite different working lives and it is worth knowing which one you are aiming at. In a hospital or a chemist's shop you read prescriptions, dispense the right drug in the right dose, check that it does not clash with something else the patient is taking, and explain how to take it. In the pharmaceutical industry, which is where most graduates go, you work in a factory or a laboratory on making and testing drugs: formulating them, running quality control, keeping the documentation that the regulator demands, or working on trials of new medicines. In government you can become a Drug Inspector, the person who inspects factories and pulls unsafe medicines off the market.

India is one of the largest medicine manufacturers in the world, so the industry side of this route is large and real. The Pharm. D is a separate six-year clinical degree aimed at working alongside doctors on a ward; the B. Pharm is four years and is the mainstream route.

Next question

What are they paid?

LPA = lakhs per annum; ₹1 lakh = ₹100,000. These are broad India market estimates across common employers and work settings—not guaranteed offers, audited statistics or the ceiling. References give context, not proof of each exact band. Historical anchors and evidence gaps remain in Sources.

What it takes to get in

Entrance exam
Varies by state, which is unusual on this route. Many states admit to B.Pharm through their own common entrance test; several admit through NEET rank; central universities including Jamia Hamdard and Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University admit through CUET-UG; and some institutions run their own test. GPAT is the exam you take later for a funded M.Pharm. Check the specific college, because there is no single national gate here.
Realistic cut-off
Class 12 with Physics and Chemistry plus either Biology or Maths, usually with an aggregate around 50-60% as the floor. This is a much less brutal filter than medicine or engineering and seats are widely available, which is precisely why the starting pay is what it is: supply is high. Registration with a State Pharmacy Council is required before you can practise as a pharmacist, under the Pharmacy Act 1948.
How long
4 years
Roughly what it costs

₹40,000–10 lakh

Roughly Rs 40,000-3 lakh in total for four years of B.Pharm at a government or central university. Private pharmacy colleges typically charge Rs 3-10 lakh for the same four years. The two-year D.Pharm diploma, which is enough to register as a pharmacist and work in a chemist's shop, is cheaper again at roughly Rs 30,000-2 lakh. The six-year Pharm.D costs more, broadly Rs 5-20 lakh at private colleges.

Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.

Can you switch out later?
Reasonable. A pharmacy degree opens the door to regulatory affairs, clinical research, medical writing, drug safety monitoring and pharmaceutical sales and marketing, and none of those require you to stay at a dispensing counter. An MBA after B.Pharm into pharmaceutical marketing or hospital administration is a common and well-trodden move. What it does not do is convert into medicine: a pharmacist cannot become a doctor without sitting NEET and doing MBBS from the beginning.

Delhi entry paths

These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.

  • Jamia Hamdard in Delhi is ranked first in the country for pharmacy in the NIRF 2025 rankings and admits to B.Pharm through CUET-UG
  • Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University, a Delhi government university created specifically for pharmacy, admits through CUET-UG
  • Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research is part of the same Delhi government university system
  • The Delhi State Pharmacy Council handles the registration you need before you can practise as a pharmacist in Delhi
  • The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation, the national drug regulator that employs Drug Inspectors, is headquartered in New Delhi
  • Delhi NCR, and the pharmaceutical manufacturing belt around Baddi in Himachal Pradesh a few hours north, is one of the country's industry clusters, alongside Hyderabad and Ahmedabad

  1. Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre www.vecc.gov.in

2026-08-17: Official Department of Atomic Energy table mapping designations to 7th Pay Commission pay levels, which places Pharmacist grades explicitly at Level 5 (Rs 29,200-92,300), Level 6 (Rs 35,400-1,12,400), Level 7 (Rs 44,900-1,42,400) and Level 11 (Rs 67,700-2,08,700) 2026-08-17: Historical published anchor for the entry rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Basic pay only, government hospital route. A Pharmacist post in a central government hospital sits at Level 5 of the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix, basic pay Rs 29,200 per month, which is Rs 3.50 lakh a year of basic. Dearness allowance, house rent allowance and transport allowance are paid on top and typically add well over half again, so the real total is considerably higher than this. The campus placement picture is worse, and it is set out here rather than left out. The country's top-ranked pharmacy schools report these medians for four-year B.Pharm graduates in 2023-24, with the number actually placed through campus recruitment in brackets: Institute of Chemical Technology Rs 6,00,000 (7 of 30 graduates), Jamia Hamdard Rs 5,25,453 (61 of 130), Delhi Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research University Rs 3,50,000 (6 of 136), Panjab University Rs 1,80,000 (3 of 52). Those placement counts are not typos. At most pharmacy colleges the large majority of the class is not placed through campus recruitment at all - many go on to an M.Pharm, and the rest find work themselves. Campus medians drawn from three or six students are too thin to build a career figure on, which is why the government scale is used for the rung and these are given as context. 2026-08-17: Historical published anchor for the mid rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Basic pay only, government hospital route. At around five years a government pharmacist has moved up the internal grades, from Level 6 of the pay matrix (basic Rs 35,400 per month, Rs 4.25 lakh a year) towards Level 7 (basic Rs 44,900 per month, Rs 5.39 lakh a year). Allowances are on top, as at entry. This ladder is used here because it is the one part of pharmacy pay that is published and dated. Industry pharmacists at five years are not covered by any source this project will cite, and their pay diverges sharply depending on whether they are in quality control, production, regulatory affairs or medical sales. 2026-08-17: Historical published anchor for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Basic pay only, government hospital route. At around ten years a government pharmacist is between Level 7 (basic Rs 44,900 per month) and the senior pharmacist grade at Level 11 (basic Rs 67,700 per month, Rs 8.12 lakh a year), depending on how the grades have opened up. Allowances are on top. The other government destination for a pharmacy graduate is Drug Inspector, a gazetted post with inspection powers. Industry pay at ten years is not sourceable and is not given.
