Science route

Allied Health Professional (Physiotherapy, Lab Technology, Radiography, Optometry)

The hands-on clinical work in a hospital that isn't done by a doctor or a nurse - moving injured joints, running lab tests, taking scans, testing eyes - through an entry route most students assume, wrongly, is NEET.

First question

What does this person do?

This is a family of separate, licensed clinical professions, not one job. A physiotherapist (BPT) assesses movement problems and treats them with exercise, manual therapy and equipment - working with orthopaedic patients recovering from surgery, stroke and neurological patients relearning to move, sports injuries, and children with developmental conditions. A medical laboratory technologist (B. Sc MLT) runs the blood, pathology and microbiology tests that a diagnosis actually depends on, operating and calibrating lab equipment rather than treating patients directly. A radiographer or imaging technologist positions patients and operates X-ray, CT and MRI machines under a radiologist's supervision. An optometrist examines eyes, tests vision and prescribes glasses and contact lenses - screening for disease, but not performing eye surgery, which stays with an ophthalmologist (an MBBS specialist). An occupational therapist helps people relearn the practical skills of daily living after an injury, stroke or disability. All of these sit inside hospitals, diagnostic chains, rehabilitation centres and increasingly sports and wellness settings, working alongside doctors and nurses rather than replacing them. The whole sector is regulated by one relatively new law, the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act, 2021, which set up a central Commission (NCAHP) and is meant to set up a State Allied and Healthcare Council in every state to standardise curricula and register practitioners. Take this seriously rather than assuming it works like the older, better-known regulators: as of mid-2025, thirteen states and union territories - including Delhi - had not yet constituted their State Council, and a Careers360 investigation found private bodies with official-sounding names such as 'Delhi State Government Paramedical Council' operating with no legal standing, charging institutes for fake affiliation.

Before you commit to an institute in this space, check that it is actually affiliated to a real university, not to one of these. Important about the entry exam, because this is genuinely in flux and most students do not know it is unsettled. Historically, and still true at most Delhi University-affiliated colleges today, these courses are entered through CUET-UG or a university's own entrance test, not NEET - unlike MBBS, BDS, AYUSH and most of nursing. But in April 2025, NCAHP and the health ministry published a revised curriculum that mandates NEET-UG for admission to physiotherapy, optometry, nutrition and dietetics, and dialysis technology from the 2026-27 academic year, and extends the BPT course from four and a half to five years with a full one-year internship. Rollout is uneven: Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University (GGSIPU), which runs Delhi's main physiotherapy colleges, explicitly announced it is keeping its own entrance test (ipu cet) for BPT and BOT and has pushed its own NEET compliance out to the 2027-28 admission cycle. Do not assume either NEET or CUET-UG is the fixed rule for the year you apply - check the specific university's current notification, because this has changed once already and is still changing. The pay bands below are broad editorial estimates across several professions and work settings, including hospitals, diagnostic chains and independent practice. They are not a measured salary distribution for each qualification. Government pay anchors in Sources apply to particular posts; private-sector salary and practice income can differ substantially.

What it takes to get in

Entrance exam
In flux - check the current year's notification rather than assuming. At Delhi University-affiliated colleges, entry is currently through CUET-UG (Physiotherapy is a listed CUET-UG domain subject) or the college's own test. At GGSIPU-affiliated colleges, which run Delhi's main BPT and BOT programmes, entry is through the university's own IPU-CET, and GGSIPU has explicitly said it will keep using IPU-CET rather than NEET-UG through the 2026-27 admission cycle. Nationally, NCAHP's 2025 curriculum reform mandates NEET-UG for physiotherapy, optometry, nutrition and dialysis technology from 2026-27 onwards, so this may change college by college over the next few admission cycles. There is no single national exam the way there is for MBBS or engineering.
Realistic cut-off
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (or Biotechnology), typically with an aggregate around 50% (45% for SC/ST categories). Because there is no single hard national filter, the effective cutoff varies enormously by state and institution: seats at GGSIPU-affiliated or DU-affiliated government colleges are moderately competitive, while a large number of private allied-health seats nationally go unfilled or are close to open admission.
How long
4.5 years
Roughly what it costs

₹50,000–6 lakh

Government and Delhi-government-affiliated colleges: roughly Rs 50,000-2 lakh for the whole course. GGSIPU-affiliated colleges in Delhi such as Banarsidas Chandiwala Institute of Physiotherapy run to around Rs 4.5-5 lakh for the full BPT. Fully private colleges elsewhere in India commonly charge Rs 3-6 lakh for BPT or B.Sc Optometry, and the shorter B.Sc Medical Laboratory Technology and radiography programmes are usually cheaper again. This is a markedly smaller financial commitment than MBBS, BDS or a private nursing seat.

Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.

Can you switch out later?
Moderate. Each of these is a distinct, licence-bound clinical skill - a physiotherapist cannot simply start working as a lab technologist - so movement within the family is limited. But graduates move into hospital administration, medical device and diagnostic equipment sales, health insurance claims work, fitness and sports science (particularly from physiotherapy), and postgraduate specialisation (an M.PT, an M.Sc in the specific discipline, or an MBA in hospital management). The field is also less crowded with competing graduates nationally than nursing or pharmacy, which works in graduates' favour when looking for a first job.

Delhi entry paths

These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.

  • Banarsidas Chandiwala Institute of Physiotherapy and ISIC Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences, both affiliated to GGSIPU, run Delhi's main BPT programmes, entered through the university's own IPU-CET rather than NEET
  • Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, and Maulana Azad Medical College, run allied-health programmes including B.Sc Medical Laboratory Technology, entered through IPU-CET or CUET-UG depending on the specific college's university affiliation
  • AIIMS New Delhi runs its own B.Sc (Hons) programmes in several allied-health disciplines, including Ophthalmic Technology and Medical Technology in Radiography and in Laboratory Sciences, entered through AIIMS's own entrance process
  • As of mid-2025, Delhi was among the states and union territories that had not yet constituted its State Allied and Healthcare Council under the NCAHP Act, 2021 - verify any institute's actual university affiliation directly rather than trusting a 'council' name on a certificate
  • Delhi has no dedicated coaching ecosystem for this route the way it does for NEET or JEE; CUET-UG preparation, which many students already do for other courses, covers the exam most of these Delhi University-affiliated programmes currently use

AIIMS Gorakhpur's official designation-to-pay-level table places Junior Physiotherapist, Optometrist and Technician (Radiology) entry grades at Level 6 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, basic Rs 35,400 per month (Rs 4.25 lakh a year); Lab Technician and Junior Medical Lab Technologist entry grades sit at Level 5, basic Rs 29,200 per month (Rs 3.50 lakh a year). Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and transport allowance are paid on top. This is a minority outcome: most BPT, B.Sc MLT, radiography and optometry graduates go straight into private hospitals, diagnostic chains or clinics, for which no acceptable published source gives a figure, and there is no official statement (of the kind the dentistry route on this map has) putting a number on it.

2026-08-18: Official India Code text of the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act, 2021, establishing the central Commission, the mandate for State Allied and Healthcare Councils, and the registration and regulation framework for allied and healthcare professions 2026-08-18: Historical evidence gap for the mid rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: No acceptable published source gives a promotion timeline from the entry grades above to a senior allied-health post, and none gives private-sector pay at this stage either - the private hospitals and diagnostic chains that employ most allied health professionals do not publish salary data, and this is exactly the kind of figure the sourcing rules for this project require to be dropped rather than guessed. The regulatory structure this cadre sits inside is itself still being built: the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions was only set up in 2021, and its state councils, uniform curricula and registration system are still rolling out. 2026-08-18: Historical evidence gap for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Same problem as the five-year rung, and worse. By ten years, senior clinical roles, department-head roles in large hospitals, and self-employed practice (physiotherapy and optometry both support independent clinics) dominate this stage, and none of these publish income data that meets this project's sourcing standard. No figure is given rather than an invented one.
