Science route

Armed Forces Officer (via NDA)

Join the Army, Navy or Air Force as an officer straight after class 12, leading soldiers, sailors or flying aircraft.

First question

What does this person do?

You take charge of people and equipment. In the Army that might mean commanding a platoon of around thirty soldiers, being responsible for their training, their discipline and their safety. In the Navy you run a department on a warship - navigation, weapons or engineering. In the Air Force you might fly a fighter or transport aircraft, or run the technical and logistics side that keeps aircraft flying.

Getting there takes three years at the National Defence Academy in Khadakwasla near Pune, where you get a degree from Jawaharlal Nehru University while doing hard physical and military training, followed by about a year at a service-specific academy. The estimates below include basic pay and common service allowances. Housing, medical support and other service benefits depend on eligibility and posting; they are not the same as cash salary or take-home pay. What you also accept is being posted wherever you are sent, including places your family cannot follow you to, and a job that can put you in real danger.

Next question

What are they paid?

LPA = lakhs per annum; ₹1 lakh = ₹100,000. These are broad India market estimates across common employers and work settings—not guaranteed offers, audited statistics or the ceiling. References give context, not proof of each exact band. Historical anchors and evidence gaps remain in Sources.

What it takes to get in

Entrance exam
UPSC NDA and Naval Academy Examination, held twice a year, followed by a five-day Services Selection Board (SSB) interview. Air Force pilot candidates additionally sit the Computerised Pilot Selection System test.
Realistic cut-off
You must be unmarried and aged roughly 16.5 to 19.5 at the time of joining, which means this route is only open to you for about three attempts and then closes forever. Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths is compulsory for the Air Force and Navy; the Army wing accepts any class 12 stream. The written exam is not the hard part - far more candidates clear the written paper than clear the SSB, which tests how you think and behave in a group over five days and cannot really be crammed for. Medical and physical standards are strict and eliminate many otherwise successful candidates.
How long
4 years
Roughly what it costs

Not stated as a single figure

Very low. NDA cadets pay a modest fee and receive a stipend during training, and the degree from JNU is included. This is one of the cheapest routes to a graduate-level officer job in India. The real cost is the age window and the commitment - officers serve a minimum tenure and cannot simply resign the way you would leave a private job.

Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.

Can you switch out later?
Limited during service, decent after. You cannot resign at will; release requires permission and a minimum period of service. Officers who leave after a Short Service Commission of ten to fourteen years are actively recruited into corporate operations, logistics, security, aviation and administration roles, and many do an MBA on the way out. But if you decide at twenty-four that you want to be a software engineer, this route makes that switch expensive.

Delhi entry paths

These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.

  • The UPSC NDA exam is written at centres across Delhi; UPSC is headquartered in Delhi at Dholpur House
  • Delhi has a dense NDA and SSB coaching ecosystem, much of it around Mukherjee Nagar and Rajinder Nagar, the same neighbourhoods that coach for the civil services
  • Rashtriya Military Schools and Sainik Schools feed this route; Delhi students also enter through school NCC units, which give a familiarity with drill and SSB-style assessment
  • Services Selection Board centres relevant to Delhi candidates are at Allahabad, Bhopal, Bangalore and Kapurthala rather than in Delhi itself
  • The NDA itself is at Khadakwasla near Pune, so this route means leaving Delhi at seventeen

A newly commissioned Lieutenant or equivalent is placed at Level 10 of the pay matrix, basic pay Rs 56,100 per month. On top of this come Military Service Pay, Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance or free government accommodation, transport allowance, free family medical cover and, for flying and other hazardous duties, substantial extra allowances. Real total value is far higher than this basic figure; the exact total varies by service, posting and current DA rate. 2026-08-17: Historical published anchor for the mid rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Basic pay only. At around five years an officer is a Captain or Major and equivalents, moving from Level 10 (Rs 56,100 per month) to Level 11 (Rs 67,700 per month). Promotion to Major is time-based rather than competitive, so this progression is near-certain for anyone who stays in. Allowances and the housing, medical and pension package are on top, as above. 2026-08-17: Historical published anchor for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Basic pay only. At around ten years an officer is a senior Major approaching Lieutenant Colonel, between Level 11 (Rs 67,700 per month) and Level 12 (Rs 78,800 per month). The armed forces use a separate defence pay matrix in which Lieutenant Colonel sits at Level 12A; the exact Level 12A figure could not be verified from a reachable official source, so the civilian Level 12 figure is used here as the nearest verified anchor. Allowances and the non-cash package are on top.
