Science route
Merchant Navy Officer
Drive and run the giant cargo ships that carry almost everything the world buys, spending months at a time at sea.
First question
What does this person do?
You work on a commercial ship - a container ship, an oil tanker, a bulk carrier. As a deck officer you stand watch on the bridge, steer and navigate the ship, plan the route, and keep the safety and lifesaving equipment working. As an engine officer you keep the engines, generators and pumps running. You live on the ship for a contract of roughly six to nine months, then come home for two to four months off. There is no commute and no rent, because the ship is your home and your food is paid for.
The trade-off is real: you are away from family for most of the year, the internet at sea is slow and expensive, and you cannot simply leave in the middle of a voyage. The pay bands below are editorial estimates of annual income, not published monthly sailing rates. Rank, vessel and the number of paid months at sea affect the total. Published monthly contract rates in Sources cannot simply be multiplied by twelve unless all twelve months are paid. Tax treatment depends on residency and the circumstances of the income.
Next question
What are they paid?
LPA = lakhs per annum; ₹1 lakh = ₹100,000. These are broad India market estimates across common employers and work settings—not guaranteed offers, audited statistics or the ceiling. References give context, not proof of each exact band. Historical anchors and evidence gaps remain in Sources.

Hiring landscape
Who hires for this work?

What it takes to get in
- Entrance exam
- IMU-CET (Indian Maritime University Common Entrance Test). Some private maritime academies run their own entrance tests. For the shorter DNS route you also need a shipping company to sponsor you before you can join.
- Realistic cut-off
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths and at least 60% aggregate, plus a pass in IMU-CET. You must also clear a strict medical: normal colour vision and good eyesight are non-negotiable, and failing the eye test ends this route completely. Company sponsorship for the DNS route is competitive and is the real bottleneck, not the exam.
- How long
- 4 years
- Roughly what it costs
₹1.5–5 lakh
Roughly Rs 1.5-5 lakh in total at a government or IMU-affiliated academy for the three-year B.Sc Nautical Science; private academies charge considerably more, and the one-year DNS course is usually Rs 1.5-4 lakh. Sponsored cadets often have part of this paid by the shipping company.
Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.
- Can you switch out later?
- Moderate. The ticket you earn (a Certificate of Competency) is recognised worldwide, which is a strong asset, but it is only useful at sea. Officers who come ashore usually move into shipping company operations, port and marine surveying, marine insurance, or maritime training - all still inside the shipping industry. Moving to a completely unrelated field means starting over, so people who leave usually do it early.
Delhi entry paths
These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.
- IMU-CET is a national computer-based exam with test centres in Delhi; you apply online and do not need to be in a coastal city to sit it
- Delhi has no IMU campus, so students from Delhi study at IMU campuses or affiliated academies in Chennai, Mumbai, Kolkata, Kochi or Visakhapatnam and live there
- The Delhi engineering-coaching ecosystem covers IMU-CET as a side offering, since the Physics-Chemistry-Maths syllabus overlaps heavily with JEE preparation
- Company sponsorship interviews for the DNS route are held by shipping companies in Mumbai and Delhi NCR
