Science route
Doctor (MBBS)
Diagnose and treat illness and injury - the route that leads to being a physician, a surgeon or any medical specialist.
First question
What does this person do?
For the first several years you are mostly in a hospital, and you are mostly tired. You see patients, take their history, examine them, order and read tests, and decide what to do. You work nights and weekends because illness does not keep office hours. After the five-and-a-half-year MBBS you are a doctor, but almost nobody stops there: to practise as anything other than a general physician you sit NEET-PG for a three-year MD or MS, and for a super-speciality another three years after that. So the realistic timeline from finishing class 12 to being a fully qualified specialist is eleven to fourteen years.
Understand what is being asked of you: the training is long, the exams do not stop, and you carry responsibility for other people's lives from quite early on. The pay bands below are broad editorial market estimates. The later bands include postgraduate-specialist and private-practice paths; they do not describe only MBBS government posts. The government basic-pay figures retained in Sources describe particular posts, while private-practice income also depends on patient volume and practice costs.
Next question
What are they paid?
LPA = lakhs per annum; ₹1 lakh = ₹100,000. These are broad India market estimates across common employers and work settings—not guaranteed offers, audited statistics or the ceiling. References give context, not proof of each exact band. Historical anchors and evidence gaps remain in Sources.

What it takes to get in
- Entrance exam
- NEET-UG, a single national exam taken after class 12. NEET-UG is required for admission to MBBS seats in India, government or private. NEET-PG follows later for specialisation.
- Realistic cut-off
- This is one of the most competitive selections in the country: roughly 20-24 lakh candidates sit NEET-UG each year for approximately 1.1-1.2 lakh MBBS seats, so about one in twenty gets a seat of any kind. A government MBBS seat needs a score far above the qualifying mark - in most states in the region of 600-650 out of 720, varying by state, category and year. Clearing the NEET qualifying percentile alone does not get you a seat; it only makes you eligible for counselling.
- How long
- 5.5 years
- Roughly what it costs
₹50,000–1 crore
Government medical college: roughly Rs 50,000-5 lakh for the whole MBBS. Private medical college: commonly Rs 60 lakh to well over Rs 1 crore for the course including hostel, and deemed universities can be higher still. The gap between the government and private price of the identical degree is the single biggest financial fact about this route, and it is why the competition for government seats is what it is.
Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.
- Can you switch out later?
- Poor by design, and that is the point. MBBS is a long, expensive, highly specific licence to practise medicine. Doctors who move out of clinical work go into public health, hospital administration, medical writing, pharmaceutical and clinical research, health policy, or the civil services - almost all of which still use the medical degree. Leaving medicine entirely after eight years of training is rare and costly. Choose this only if you actually want to treat patients.
Delhi entry paths
These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.
- AIIMS New Delhi, Maulana Azad Medical College, Lady Hardinge Medical College, University College of Medical Sciences and Vardhman Mahavir Medical College at Safdarjung Hospital - all entered only through NEET-UG
- Delhi state quota seats in NEET-UG counselling require that you studied class 11 and 12 in a Delhi school, which makes where you do your schooling a real strategic decision
- Delhi's NEET coaching ecosystem is concentrated in Rajinder Nagar, Karol Bagh, Pitampura, Laxmi Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar, and many students take a dedicated repeat year after class 12
- Jamia Millia Islamia and Hamdard offer allied and alternative medicine routes in Delhi, but MBBS itself is only through the colleges above

2026-08-17: Official 7th Pay Commission pay level table giving basic pay bands: Level 10 Rs 56,100-1,77,500 (Junior Resident), Level 11 Rs 67,700-2,08,700 (Senior Resident), Level 12 Rs 78,800-2,09,200 2026-08-17: Historical published anchor for the entry rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Basic pay only. A Junior Resident, the first paid post after the MBBS internship, is placed at Level 10 of the pay matrix, basic Rs 56,100 per month, at AIIMS and at Delhi government medical colleges. Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and Non-Practising Allowance are paid on top and add a substantial amount. The compulsory one-year rotating internship that comes before this pays a smaller stipend that is set by each state and varies widely across India. 2026-08-17: Historical published anchor for the mid rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Basic pay only. At around five years - typically during or just after an MD or MS - a doctor holds a Senior Resident post, placed at Level 11 of the pay matrix, basic Rs 67,700 per month. Allowances as above are on top. Private-sector pay at this stage is not covered by any acceptable published source. 2026-08-17: Historical published anchor for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Basic pay only and government service only - this is an understatement of what many senior doctors earn. A specialist in central government service around the ten-year mark sits between Level 11 (Rs 67,700 per month basic) and Level 12 (Rs 78,800 per month basic), with Dearness Allowance, HRA and Non-Practising Allowance on top. Consultants in large private hospitals, and doctors with an established private practice, commonly earn well above this - but consultant pay is negotiated individually and private practice income is business profit, so neither appears in any published dataset that meets this project's sourcing standard.
