Science route

Research Scientist (Pure Sciences)

Spend your working life finding out things nobody knows yet - in physics, chemistry, biology or maths - at a university or a national laboratory.

First question

What does this person do?

You pick a narrow question inside a subject you love and you attack it for years. Day to day this means running experiments or simulations, reading what other researchers have published, arguing about results with your group, and writing up what you found as a paper that other scientists check before it is published. The path is long and it is a real commitment: a three-year B. Sc, then a two-year M. Sc, then a PhD that usually takes four to six years.

During the PhD you are not a student paying fees - you are paid a monthly fellowship by the government to do research. After the PhD most people do a 'postdoc', another few years of research on someone else's project, before getting a permanent job as a scientist at a national lab or as a professor at a university. Be clear-eyed about it: the money is modest compared with engineering or medicine for the first decade, and permanent positions are genuinely scarce. People do this because the work itself is the point.

Next question

What are they paid?

LPA = lakhs per annum; ₹1 lakh = ₹100,000. These are broad India market estimates across common employers and work settings—not guaranteed offers, audited statistics or the ceiling. References give context, not proof of each exact band. Historical anchors and evidence gaps remain in Sources.

What it takes to get in

Entrance exam
No single exam. Common routes in after class 12 are the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) for the five-year BS-MS programme, the CUET-UG for B.Sc at central universities including Delhi University, and NEST for NISER. Later you need csir-ugc net or GATE to get a funded PhD place, and most institutes add their own written test and interview.
Realistic cut-off
For a B.Sc at a well-regarded Delhi University college you generally need a strong CUET score; for IISER through IAT you need to be comfortable with class 11 and 12 Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology at a level above the board exams. The harder filter comes later: Csir-ugc net has a very low qualifying percentage, and clearing it with a JRF-eligible rank rather than just a lectureship-eligible one is what unlocks the funded PhD.
How long
10 years
Roughly what it costs

₹30,000–3 lakh

Low by Indian standards. A B.Sc plus M.Sc at a central or state university typically costs Rs 30,000-3 lakh in total. The PhD itself is effectively free and you are paid a stipend throughout, so the real cost of this route is not fees - it is the eight to ten years of low earnings while your school friends in engineering and medicine are drawing salaries.

Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.

Can you switch out later?
Good early, narrow later. A B.Sc or M.Sc in a science subject is a broad qualification and people move from it into data science, teaching, scientific publishing, patent work, government scientific services and management via an MBA. Once you are three or four years into a PhD in a narrow topic, switching gets much harder because your specific expertise stops transferring - though the underlying skills (statistics, programming, writing) do.

Delhi entry paths

These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.

  • Delhi University B.Sc (Hons) in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Zoology or Botany, entered through CUET-UG
  • Jamia Millia Islamia and Ambedkar University Delhi for undergraduate science, also through CUET-UG
  • IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) for the five-year integrated BS-MS, written at Delhi test centres; the IISER campuses themselves are outside Delhi
  • Delhi is where a large share of India's research funding sits: CSIR labs, the Indian Agricultural Research Institute at Pusa, the National Physical Laboratory, and university departments across DU, JNU, IIT Delhi and Jamia
  • The Delhi coaching ecosystem for IIT-JEE and NEET also prepares students for IAT and NEST, as the syllabus is largely shared
