Core Engineer (Mechanical, Civil, Electrical)

Design, build and keep running the physical things around you - machines, power grids, roads, bridges, factories and metro lines.

First question

What does this person do?

These are three different jobs that share an entrance exam and a first year of college. A mechanical engineer designs and tests things that move: engines, pumps, car parts, factory machinery, air conditioning. A civil engineer designs and supervises the building of structures: buildings, highways, water systems, metro tunnels, dams. An electrical engineer works on how power is generated, carried and used: substations, grids, motors, industrial control systems. Compared with software the day looks different.

You spend real time on a site, in a plant, or in a workshop, not only at a desk; drawings and standards matter more than code; and a mistake can be expensive or dangerous rather than just a bug. Employers include private manufacturers, contractors and consultancies, as well as public sector energy, steel, oil and railway companies, Public Works Departments, and metro and highway authorities. The pay bands below are editorial estimates across these settings. Government pay scales retained in Sources apply to specific posts and do not establish the earnings of every core engineering graduate.

Next question

What are they paid?

LPA = lakhs per annum; ₹1 lakh = ₹100,000. These are broad India market estimates across common employers and work settings—not guaranteed offers, audited statistics or the ceiling. References give context, not proof of each exact band. Historical anchors and evidence gaps remain in Sources.

What it takes to get in

Entrance exam
JEE Main for the NITs, the Delhi engineering colleges and most state and private colleges; JEE Advanced, which you reach by scoring high enough in JEE Main, for the 23 IITs. Later, if you want a government or public sector engineering job, the exams that matter are GATE - which most public sector companies use to shortlist graduate engineers - and the UPSC Engineering Services Examination.
Realistic cut-off
Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Maths. In practice core branches close at noticeably easier ranks than computer science at the same institute, so this is the route many students take when their JEE rank does not reach computer science. Be honest with yourself about whether you are choosing the subject or settling for it, because the two lead to quite different working lives. There is no separate medical or physical test.
How long
4 years
Roughly what it costs

₹6–25 lakh

Same as any B.Tech: roughly Rs 8-10 lakh in total at an IIT, Rs 6-8 lakh at an NIT, Rs 6-10 lakh at DTU or NSUT, and anywhere from Rs 6 lakh to over Rs 25 lakh at a private college. Fee waivers on the basis of family income are standard at government institutes. JEE coaching, if taken, adds Rs 1-5 lakh over two years.

Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.

Can you switch out later?
Moderate. Moving from core engineering into software, data or analytics is common and the industry accepts it, though you will be competing with people who studied it. Moving into management via an MBA is the other well-worn exit and core engineers are heavily represented in Indian business schools. Moving in the other direction, into core engineering from an unrelated degree, is difficult because the site and design work is regulated and credential-bound. Within core, moving between mechanical, civil and electrical after graduation is harder than students expect.

Delhi entry paths

These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.

  • JEE Main and JEE Advanced are written at test centres across Delhi and Delhi NCR
  • Delhi Technological University, formerly Delhi College of Engineering, has the largest core engineering intake in the city and admits through JEE Main
  • Netaji Subhas University of Technology and Jamia Millia Islamia also admit to core branches through JEE Main
  • IIT Delhi admits to mechanical, civil, electrical and allied branches through JEE Advanced
  • Delhi is the head office city for a large number of the government engineering employers on this route - the Central Public Works Department, the National Highways Authority of India, the Railway Board, the Central Electricity Authority and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation are all headquartered here
  • Delhi's JEE coaching ecosystem, and the Kota hostel route many Delhi students take for class 11 and 12, is the same for core branches as for computer science

  1. Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar www.iitbbs.ac.in

2026-08-17: IIT Bhubaneswar's own published 2025 placement statistics giving branch-wise median and average salary and placement percentage: Mechanical median Rs 9 lakh (average Rs 14.77 lakh, 93.7% placed), Civil median Rs 9.5 lakh (average Rs 14.8 lakh, 88.6% placed), Electrical median Rs 12 lakh (average Rs 19 lakh, 91.5% placed), Metallurgical and Materials median Rs 12.1 lakh, against Computer Science median Rs 14 lakh 2026-08-17: Historical published anchor for the entry rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Published MEDIAN starting packages by branch from IIT Bhubaneswar's own 2025 placement disclosure: Mechanical Engineering Rs 9 lakh, Civil Engineering Rs 9.5 lakh, Electrical Engineering Rs 12 lakh, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Rs 12.1 lakh. In the same table Computer Science sits at Rs 14 lakh, so the gap between core and computer science at one institute in one year is roughly a third to a half. Note also how much higher the averages are than the medians in that disclosure - Mechanical averages Rs 14.77 lakh against a median of Rs 9 lakh - which is why medians are used here. This band describes a nationally ranked IIT; core branches at less selective colleges are placed lower, and a substantial share of core-branch graduates end up taking software or analytics jobs instead, which is not visible in these numbers.

2026-08-17: NIT Tiruchirappalli's NIRF 2025 submission: median salary of placed four-year UG graduates across all branches of Rs 14,35,000 in 2023-24, with 791 of 1,029 graduates placed - an all-branch median, which blends the higher computer science offers with the lower core-branch ones

  3. National Institutional Ranking Framework www.nirfindia.org

2026-08-17: Delhi Technological University's NIRF 2025 submission: median salary of placed four-year UG graduates of Rs 13,25,000 in 2023-24, with 1,759 of 2,412 graduates placed and 653 going on to higher studies

  5. Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre www.vecc.gov.in

2026-08-17: Official 7th Pay Commission pay level table giving basic pay bands: Level 10 Rs 56,100-1,77,500, Level 11 Rs 67,700-2,08,700, Level 12 Rs 78,800-2,09,200 2026-08-17: Historical evidence gap for the mid rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: No acceptable public source publishes private-sector core engineering pay at around five years. What is published, and is genuinely the mainstream path on this route, is the government scale. An engineer recruited into the space, atomic energy or public sector engineering services enters at Level 10 of the pay matrix - basic pay Rs 56,100 a month, which is Rs 6.73 lakh a year of basic - and moves to Level 11, basic Rs 67,700 a month, on promotion. That is basic pay only and badly understates the real package: dearness allowance, house rent allowance or government housing, transport allowance, medical cover and a pension are all on top, and together they usually add well over half again. The private-sector figure at the same stage is not publishable from any source this project will cite. 2026-08-17: Historical evidence gap for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Same as the five-year rung. The sourceable government anchor at around ten years is Level 11 to Level 12 of the pay matrix, basic pay Rs 67,700 to Rs 78,800 a month, again before the allowances that make up a large part of a government engineer's actual income. Private-sector senior core engineering pay varies so much by industry - construction, energy, automotive, heavy manufacturing all pay differently - that no honest single band can be given from published sources.
