Science route
Agricultural Scientist / Agriculture Officer (B.Sc Hons Agriculture)
Study crops, soil, livestock and food systems in a four-year professional degree, then go into agricultural research, a bank's farm-lending desk, government extension work, or the seed and agri-input industry.
First question
What does this person do?
B. Sc (Hons) Agriculture is a four-year professional degree - agronomy, soil science, plant breeding, entomology, plant pathology, horticulture, animal husbandry basics, agricultural economics and extension education - taught at India's network of ICAR-affiliated state and central agricultural universities. A distinctive feature most students do not know about going in: the final year normally includes Rural Agricultural Work Experience (RAWE), a compulsory stretch actually living in a village and working with real farmers, not a classroom exercise. This is a professional degree built around agriculture as a system - the science, the economics, the policy - not a licence you need to farm your own land; nobody needs a degree to grow crops on land they own. What you do afterwards splits into genuinely different careers. A large number go straight into public sector bank recruitment as an Agriculture/Field Officer, appraising and sanctioning farm loans, crop insurance and rural credit - banks are one of the largest single organised recruiters of this degree every year, hiring straight out of the four years with no further study required. Others join a state agriculture department as an extension officer, working directly with farmers on adopting new seed varieties, irrigation methods and government schemes.
A minority go on to an M. Sc and then compete for a Scientist post in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) - through ICAR, the national network of over 100 research institutes and the State Agricultural Universities - doing the actual research and teaching side of the field; this is the most prestigious destination but requires several more years of study after the B. Sc, not a direct route. The largest group by sheer numbers goes into the private sector: seed companies, fertiliser and pesticide (agri-input) companies, food processing and agri-commodity trading firms, mostly in sales, technical advisory or quality-control roles. The pay bands below are editorial estimates across agribusiness, bank agriculture-officer roles, extension work and research. The bank and ICAR/ARS pay scales retained in Sources describe specific jobs with their own selection and qualification requirements. Those scales do not establish the earnings of all agriculture graduates or validate the exact market bands.

What are they paid?
LPA = lakhs per annum; ₹1 lakh = ₹100,000. These are broad India market estimates across common employers and work settings—not guaranteed offers, audited statistics or the ceiling. References give context, not proof of each exact band. Historical anchors and evidence gaps remain in Sources.

What it takes to get in
- Entrance exam
- CUET (ICAR-UG), conducted by the National Testing Agency, allots the 15% All India Quota seats at every State Agricultural University and 100% of seats at ICAR Deemed Universities (such as IARI and NDRI). Many state agricultural universities also admit through their own state-level entrance test or via the state's general engineering/medical common entrance test. There is no separate NEET-style single exam covering every seat nationally.
- Realistic cut-off
- Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics, typically with an aggregate around 50%. Government agricultural university seats are moderately competitive but nowhere near as contested as MBBS or engineering at a comparable institute; a large number of private agriculture college seats nationally go unfilled.
- How long
- 4 years
- Roughly what it costs
₹40,000–9 lakh
Government ICAR-affiliated agricultural universities: roughly Rs 40,000-2 lakh for the whole four years, among the cheapest professional degrees covered on this map. Private agriculture colleges commonly charge Rs 4-9 lakh for the same four years. There is no equivalent of the coaching-industry cost that inflates the real price of MBBS or engineering here.
Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.
- Can you switch out later?
- Good. The degree is not tied to a single professional registration, which the licence-bound routes on this map are. Graduates move into public sector bank recruitment (a formal, well-worn channel), private agribusiness and FMCG sales and management, an MBA in agribusiness management, state and central government administrative services (the degree is as eligible for the UPSC Civil Services Examination as any other), the development and NGO sector, and further study towards ICAR/ARS research. What it does not convert into without further study is a licence to practise veterinary medicine or a research post - both need additional qualifications.
Delhi entry paths
These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.
- IARI, Pusa, New Delhi does not offer the undergraduate B.Sc (Hons) Agriculture; it is the country's leading destination for postgraduate work (M.Sc, M.Tech, PhD) after a B.Sc taken elsewhere, entered through ICAR aieea (pg) or AICE-JRF/SRF for a PhD
- For the undergraduate degree, Delhi NCR students most often go to the nearest State Agricultural Universities - Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, and Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar - or to any of the universities nationally that participate in CUET (ICAR-UG) counselling
- CUET (ICAR-UG) is a national exam administered by NTA with test centres across Delhi NCR
- The Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board (ASRB), which recruits ICAR/ARS scientists nationally, is headquartered at Pusa Campus, New Delhi
- IBPS, which recruits Agriculture Field Officers into public sector banks nationally, writes its exams at test centres across Delhi NCR
- Delhi has no dedicated coaching ecosystem for CUET (ICAR-UG) the way it does for NEET or JEE; general CUET-UG preparation covers most of the overlapping syllabus

Public sector banks recruit Agriculture Field Officer (Scale I) through IBPS, requiring only the four-year B.Sc Agriculture degree with no further study - one of the largest organised, immediately-accessible destinations for a fresh graduate on this route. Under the bank officers' 9th Joint Note (the officers' equivalent of the 12th Bipartite Settlement, effective November 2022), Scale I basic pay starts at Rs 48,480 per month (Rs 5.82 lakh a year), rising on a fixed scale to Rs 85,920 at the top of Scale I. Dearness Allowance, HRA and other allowances are paid on top. State agriculture department entry cadres (Agriculture Development Officer or equivalent) run on separate state pay scales that could not be verified from a single reachable official source and are not used here; private agribusiness and seed-company entry pay has no acceptable published source at all.

Entry-level Scientist posts in the Agricultural Research Service, recruited by the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board (ASRB) through the combined NET/ARS examination, sit at Level 10 of the 7th CPC pay matrix, basic Rs 56,100 per month. Because this route requires an M.Sc and a competitive exam after the B.Sc, reaching this post typically happens some years after graduation, which is why it is placed at the five-year rung rather than at entry. Promotion timelines and pay for the bank Agriculture Field Officer route past entry level, for state agriculture department cadres, and for private agribusiness roles at this stage could not be sourced and are not given. 2026-08-18: Historical published anchor for the senior rung; not validation of the displayed estimate: Basic pay only, ICAR/ARS track only. A Scientist who has been promoted once or twice under ICAR's Career Advancement Scheme sits between Level 10 and Level 11 of the pay matrix (basic Rs 56,100 to Rs 67,700 per month) around this stage, with Dearness Allowance and HRA on top. The bank, state government and private-sector tracks have no sourceable figure at ten years - private agribusiness income in particular depends heavily on the specific company and role, and no public dataset captures it.
