Science route
AYUSH Doctor (BAMS Ayurveda / BHMS Homoeopathy)
Train as a licensed Ayurvedic or homoeopathic doctor through the same NEET-UG exam as MBBS - the route a huge number of NEET candidates end up on when the MBBS rank does not come.
First question
What does this person do?
Ayurveda (BAMS) and homoeopathy (BHMS) are two separate systems of medicine, taught in two separate five-and-a-half-year degrees, regulated by two separate statutory bodies - the National Commission for Indian System of Medicine (NCISM) for Ayurveda and the National Commission for Homoeopathy (NCH) for homoeopathy - but for most students the way in is identical: NEET-UG, the same exam used for MBBS and BDS. Every year a large share of the roughly 20-24 lakh NEET candidates end up on this route not because they set out to study Ayurveda or homoeopathy, but because their score cleared the qualifying percentile without clearing the much higher bar for an MBBS or BDS seat, and a BAMS or BHMS seat is what their rank could reach in counselling. Go in with your eyes open about that, because almost nobody explains it to you beforehand. Day to day, a BAMS graduate diagnoses and treats patients using Ayurvedic principles and pharmacology - herbal and mineral-based formulations, dietary and lifestyle prescription, and, in the surgical stream, minor procedures. A BHMS graduate does the same within homoeopathy's own diagnostic and prescribing framework, working with dilute preparations rather than herbal or conventional drugs. Both spend the first four and a half years in classroom and hospital-based clinical training that includes real modern-medicine subjects - anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology - alongside their own system's texts and therapeutics, then a compulsory one-year rotating internship before they can register to practise. Registration afterwards is with the state or central register maintained under each Commission, not with the National Medical Commission that registers MBBS doctors - a different, separate professional licence. What you can legally do with that licence is genuinely unsettled and varies by state, and it is worth knowing this before you commit rather than after.
Several states allow BAMS graduates, and in some cases BHMS graduates who complete an additional bridge or pharmacology certificate course, to prescribe a defined list of modern (allopathic) medicines - Maharashtra's Certificate Course in Modern Pharmacology for homoeopaths is one example - while the Indian Medical Association and MBBS bodies have opposed this repeatedly, and in some states it remains contested or restricted. Do not assume you will be able to prescribe allopathic drugs freely; the rule is not the same in every state and it has changed more than once. Career paths after internship include competitive recruitment to government Medical Officer posts, salaried work in clinics and hospitals, independent practice, and pharmaceutical or wellness-industry roles. An MD (Ayurveda) or MD (Homoeopathy) can lead to further specialist or teaching work. The pay bands below are editorial market estimates spanning different work settings, not the rate for a government Medical Officer. Government posts have specific pay scales; clinic revenue must also cover practice costs before it becomes owner income. The references do not establish what proportion of graduates enters each path.

What are they paid?
LPA = lakhs per annum; ₹1 lakh = ₹100,000. These are broad India market estimates across common employers and work settings—not guaranteed offers, audited statistics or the ceiling. References give context, not proof of each exact band. Historical anchors and evidence gaps remain in Sources.

What it takes to get in
- Entrance exam
- NEET-UG - the same single national exam used for MBBS and BDS. There is no separate AYUSH entrance exam. The 15% All India Quota seats, including central universities and deemed universities, are allotted through AACCC (AYUSH Admissions Central Counselling Committee); the remaining 85% state-quota seats go through each state's own counselling.
- Realistic cut-off
- BAMS and BHMS close at NEET-UG scores well below BDS, which is itself well below MBBS - in practice this is where a large share of NEET candidates land when their score clears the qualifying percentile (50th percentile for general category, 40th for SC/ST/OBC) but not the much higher bar for an MBBS or BDS seat. A government-college seat is still contested, but private BAMS and BHMS seats go unfilled in large numbers most years, so a seat somewhere is obtainable at a fairly modest score.
- How long
- 5.5 years
- Roughly what it costs
₹50,000–30 lakh
Government BAMS or BHMS college: roughly Rs 50,000-3 lakh for the whole five-and-a-half years, similar to a government BDS seat. Private BAMS or BHMS college: commonly Rs 10-30 lakh for the course, and some private colleges charge more. As with dentistry, a large loan taken against a private seat is a mismatch against the entry earnings shown here for anyone who does not end up in a well-placed government post.
Approximate, tuition only, excluding coaching and living costs unless the source text says otherwise.
- Can you switch out later?
- Poor to moderate. The registration is specific to Ayurveda or homoeopathy and does not convert into an MBBS licence - a BAMS or BHMS graduate who wants to practise modern medicine without restriction has to sit NEET and do MBBS from the start, exactly like a dentist. Inside the field, graduates move into the large Ayurvedic and homoeopathic pharmaceutical and wellness industry, public health administration, teaching after an MD in their own system, or government administrative cadres via a competitive exam. The 'bridge course' route into limited allopathic prescribing exists in some states but is contested, changes over time, and should not be assumed as a given when you enrol.
Delhi entry paths
These are the routes people in Delhi commonly take into this career. This is not a ranking of institutions and does not list cut-offs for any particular college.
- Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College, Karol Bagh - a Delhi government college affiliated with the University of Delhi's Faculty of Ayurvedic and Unani Medicine (FMSC) - entered through NEET-UG
- Nehru Homoeopathic Medical College, also under the Delhi government and the University of Delhi, entered through NEET-UG
- The 85% Delhi state-quota seats at both colleges are counselled through FMSC, University of Delhi, and require that you completed class 11 and 12 at a school in Delhi
- The remaining 15% All India Quota seats nationally, including at these Delhi colleges, are counselled centrally through AACCC (aaccc.gov.in)
- Delhi's NEET coaching ecosystem - concentrated in Rajinder Nagar, Karol Bagh, Pitampura and Mukherjee Nagar - prepares for NEET-UG generally; there is no separate AYUSH-specific coaching track
